Re: FU$%#$@@ ocular

Making the nasal and brow separate pieces sounds like a thing to try. The cheeks? They are going to be under chainmail so they are just kinda there.

new guy looking for japanese helm, budget cap $400

Subject pretty much says it all. I wish I could help the guy but I know bugger all about Japanese armor and he is pretty set on having an at least reasonably accurate Japanese helm.

Re: FU$%#$@@ ocular

I think it would make the helm easier to see out of. Its just tweaking the size and shape of the ocular while still having it look cool that's kind of tricky. Spending some time looking at examples (both period and modern SCA versions) is on my to do list.

Re: FU$%#$@@ ocular

Yeah one question I have to answer, is it worth having to put a crossbar in the ocular? (as in make the opening greater than an inch). I will have to give it some thought. This thing will have about the same vision as a great helm.

OK, so my next question is does it need to be 31 inches? That's a really big hat. I do 28" for a 23 - 23.5 inch head

Re: FU$%#$@@ ocular

I think the face looking overlong is a result of how its sitting and that the back has not yet been attached. (Im hoping anyway). I agree about the outward slant. I have the same problem with my nasals, trying to make sure there is enough room for the persons nose. I try to add some for / aft depth ...

FU$%#$@@ ocular

Attempting a spangen with ocular instead of just a nasal like I usually do. Has been a pain. Just laying the thing over the bar grill looked bad. Modifying the bar grill (was working with an already made helm) likewise turned out poorly. So I ended up starting from scratch. This is what I have so fa...

It was a paypal account, I do not have the paypal debit card. Never got around to getting one. One thing I have not been able to find out though, is if they used my email address (which is also my paypal user name) and password, or my mobile phone number and pin. In any event this is the response th...

No problem. I charge $150 for the plain steel greathelm, $225 for the blackened greathelm with cross (in steel or brass). Sugarloafs with cross are also $225

I have always liked greathelms and sugarloaf (which is a type of greathelm). I just have gotten spoiled fighting in an open faced helm. Better pic btw.

So my question is, what are your intentions for this bead roller now that you are done retuning it? If you are happy with your lowbuck and were just doing this for the fun of it you could sell it to me and save me having to perform the same surgery :)

Basic steel greathelm. In this pic the breaths had not yet been drilled. Will post more of the pics as I find them. (the other two are a blackened greathelm with polished steel cross and a two color norse spangen)

My paypal account got hacked yesterday. Pretty much cleaned me out. Sent the money to Mohamed Abusedo, overseas somewhere. Re: Not exactly armor but .... Period tents

Couple of things, I would be happy to buy a tent as opposed to trying to make my own, I just have a bad case of BAS (that's broke as shit) disease. I got my start making helms way back when because I simply couldn't find one that I could afford. There have been several good suggestions as for the ty...
