Copper Alloy Maille

Hi all, So this is something that got found at the site where I was working this summer. Thought you all make like to take a look. This was found out of context (it fell out of a baulk wall), but is likely middle 13th to 14th century in date. http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs158.snc1/5...

My head is somewhere between 23" and 23.5", is this about the right size helm once padding is applied?

Let me do some length/width/height measurements to confirm.

Nah, that's what archaeologists are like sometimes. Sorry, I don't know details of the way the shield was found I haven't looked at the details of that excavation, but from what I've seen it was a well conducted excavation, especially for the time in which it was done (1939). They discovered and tra...

You bring up a very good point. The shield probably WAS tooled and painted or stained . . . but all of the organic material is long gone, the shield fittings were found "suspended" in place by the dirt around them, still arranged in the same pattern as they had been on the shield. So, ther...

Yw . . . and, Ronan, by the end of the 14th century some of the gallowglass positions were becoming a weird form of landed nobility, an office with set duties and responsibilities, and some of those positions did pass into the hands of purely Irish men, when they were the guys for the job, so you co...

If you use the right materials, it will NOT kill you, even in the heat. LINEN IS KEY! It is amazingly comfortable in any heat, just as good as (in my opinion better than) underarmour and the like. Plus, with maille, you're going to need padding unless you just have a huge pain tolerance, it does nex...

Which side? And what ethnicity? If you're Gaelic, including for example (but not limited to by any means) the gallowglass that were Robert the Bruce's personal troops at Bannockburn, the whole soft kit changes.

First, a bit of history. The first Galloglass known to have been soldiers of an Irish lord were given to Aedh Ua Conchobair (aka O Conor, a personal favorite of mine because he had the good graces to burn the hall house at Kilteasheen where I worked at excavations) in 1259 after he married the daugh...

History of Plate Armour?

Hi all, I'm pretty well versed on most things early period, but have never studied much later medieval archaeology (a bit on architecture of castles and churches in Ireland, but that's it). Seeing all the pictures here, I'm starting to get curious about all the later period armour . . . so, I'm wond...
