Simply. They grooved it close and then heated the tang to red and burned it in. Do the same, then drill a hole through the handle and tang, tap in a nice pin to match those caps, cut it close and peen or press it. If you want to make dead sure the handle will never loosen, after you burn the channel...

MY heavy work anvil is at the hieght of my knuckles when I stand whith my hand hanging down. My detail work anvil is closer to my belly button. Ahh red short means it cracks and has to be forged at lower temps not higher! Cold short is when it's needs to be worked hotter as it's not workable colder---much low grade wrought iron is cold short. I mixed my terms, thank you for the correct info!
