Re: Join the dark side - Just in time for X-mas

Oh yes great Socrates, surely your wisdom and judgement shall enlighten and uplift us. -Except from an actual Greek Chorus I guess I will have to get some blue foam, pad it back up properly, take more pictures and charge more for the extra time, so that people who are trolls, have ZERO interest or ...

Re: Old bascinet refurbish - Finished pics up!

It amazes me how many times I've had to repeat...

IT HAS A **&*^&^% ING!!! pair of flannel pants rolled up and stuffed in the top so I could balance it on my head to take pics....

I guess I'll have to toss some blue foam in it to satisfy Irish's f**king greek chorus.

Re: Join the dark side - Just in time for X-mas

That helm does look really short though. Anyone with a neck will have to wear a pretty tall gorget to make it legal. Even with the "aventail=legal" rule, as a marshal I would hesitate to pass that helm as is. Wow... All from a picture without proper padding (there's a pair of flannel pant...

Oh well, I'm glad you got the $ you needed for your new kit and other stuff. If I hadn't gotten sidetracked on other projects I'd have had the $ for it earlier.

Daffyd,

With the brig now sold I have the cash to purchase. I want to make sure it would fit me for sure but if Griffith or Palladin74 don't purchase it I call dibbs pending size. I wish my arms were smaller because I'd pair this up with the ones being offered by Merc Tailor in a hot second.

Refurbished tall point bascinet - Armoured Pics, price drop

I'm selling the helm I just refurbished. I was going to save this to go with a turn key kit but have had setbacks with the rest of the pieces. Details (including sizing) are in the refurbish thread here http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=142749 I'd like $250 for it, Paypa...

Re: Old bascinet refurbish - Finished pics up!

Ok I decided to not use rivets, so I sewed everything with doubled, waxed upholstery thread. I also found that I had a lot more of those bronze rings than I remembered... so i finished the aventail with dagging. The chincup straps are being held in with large brass chicago screws that have had thier...

LoL.... nice work Hal, I think that bascinet is pretty and the new nasal in bronze is awesome.

Folks don't seem to understand just how big a chunk of build or rebuild time is in the details as well as finish.
Eats up a lot of time to get it right.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I already have the Viking Leather/Westland laced 14th century boots dyed oxblood waiting to be laced to a set of these. Just got in the soccer shin guards I'm going to use as a mold for schynbalds too. James may not be a "pro" armourer but his wo...

Re: Looking for Handcrafted Damascus Chef Knife

I will have an open custom slot in February. Are you interested in stainless damascus or traditional carbon/nickle steels? I'm sure you are already aware that carbon steels will discolor and can flavor some foods. Acidic foods will also discolor the steel. This can be somewhat ablated by wiping the ...

Re: How to remove the gray coating on cold rolled mild steel

+1 on muratic acid. I use an 18 gallon plastic tote, 14 gallons of water, 1 gallon of pool acid. about a 24 hour soak. It helps to fully degrease first. I find that hot water & laundry detergent works well for this. I can usually fit in multiple items like 2-3 helmets or leggs & 2 sets of ar...

Re: Old bascinet refurbish

Ok... here's some update pics. I had to wait for the brass cotter pins to get shipped. The aventail that came with the helmet originally left a bit to be desired. It got pulled apart and totally redone with expansion panels and drop rings. New leathers were cut, dyed, sealed & installed. Tabs to...

At the risk of a time out.... You come on here claiming to be some hot dog master craftsman and all you have to show looks like a 5 year old was allowed to play with files. 1. Would that not be a better picture for your website then?

2. Finish has little to do with "Shiny"

3. Crappy camera, got ya.

4. And the mortuary down the street has zero complaints too....

Re: Who does solid work in stainless?

I'd go KWT unless cheapest price is your main concern. You will get more than you pay for from KWT, IMO. The articulation from JRA can be a bit hit and miss. I've seen several examples that were smooth through the whole range and others that would'nt straighten past 90% because of over peened rivets...

Before you seal it... spraying it with chlorine bleach will even and deepen that russet... it's VERY agressive so the stronger it is or if you use a sweatbox... the more pitted the results. you also have to rinse it in clean water and dry it after treatment.

The Buffer is by FAR the most dangerous tool in the shop.... unless you happen to be running salt tanks for some reason. #2 is the drill press. Hand tools injure, power tools maim & kill. I remember years ago when on another forum, a smith named PawPaw showed pictures of the 1/4" rod he was...
