Here's an idea... Do the heavy bolster with 1/8" to 1/4" Brass. Drill & file to just slip down the tang with little to no gap. Use JB weld to fill any gaps. Take a piece of scrap brass and grind or file a chisel edge on it. Use that to remove excess JB weld, it wont scratch the brass! Do your leathe...

How much is the fishtail & cross? Is it a flattened oval section rather than round in the opening of the guard?

The leather backed tombstone Klivanion is Byzantine and is the best documented. The "D" shape lamellar plates are a bit of a wobbler... They found very few of them in Birka and are of a more Eastern / Central Asian influence. They would not be unknown but *I* would say they are better for a personae...

Thanks for the idea and input Konstantin but I'm planning on soda blasting rather than converting the rust.

The center band is also going to be removed so I can more easily work on the helmet top but it will probably get refinished with a surface disk on a air die grinder.
