Re: The absolute fundamentals (SCA)

Stretching before practice is counter-productive. Use the first couple of drills to get warmed up and stretched out (dynamic stretching). The results are in on this one and stretching before the real exercise/sport/event reduces your performance. Stretch afterward, showing them things they can and ...

Re: The absolute fundamentals (SCA)

There's a lot of good advice here but allow me to add to it... First - Teach good prep. Have a group Stretch routine BEFORE armouring up and before even doing slow work or drills. Second - Do a group jog. Get the heart rate elevated for a solid 10-15 minutes. As folks get their gear together, do it ...

Re: cost of torch with gas saver and rosebud tip.

Ruthardus, With a rosebud please be cautious about reducing the oxygen of your basement shop enviroment. The name of the game is venting and air exchange. Just don't want you to accidently get carbon monoxide poisoning and when you move to that kind of torch, used in a smaller enviroment like that, ...

Oh and have PLENTY of paper towels handy and some acetone. And Popsicle sticks... lots of popsicle sticks. Why? You'll know the second you start using epoxy. Especially the longer set time (thinner) formulae. Oh and have a plan for drips. Cover every surface it is even remotely possible to drip onto.

PM or email me please if you have anything trade wise you'd like to discuss. T...

Re: WTB/WTT: Lance head made to spec

How close to spec does one need to work? What material does it need to be made from? Do you need specific hardness ranges? Must it be a tapered socket? Must it be a welded socket? Forge welded? Modern? What size shaft are you trying to fit? Are you married to square or may it be triangular? Oh and b...

Darius, While I agree an arrestor is a good safety idea. You should be aware that most Venturi burners don't have the negative atmosphere / forge bomb issue. I address this with a ball valve on the burner distribution bar. Tank on... check redhead pressure... crack ball valve... Push the ignitor a c...

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?

Change comes but slowly to the SCA. I can remember when playing with a fencing blade on the side, would get you banned from fighter practice. I can remember when 90+% of the guys didn't want women in combat. There are many many more examples. We as a society tend to cling tightly to our traditions r...

The one you posted is indeed a 16th century example but it's not a Behourd helm. It is however the inspiration for this helmet made by Illusion... ...

Re: Need Boxwood for period leatherworking tool (X-Post)

Basswood I mentioned this wood because of it's very smooth, very tight grain. Its been used since time immemorial for a carving wood. It is softer than Boxwood, which sees most of its modern use in lower end woodwinds and higher grade chess sets. Basswood is also a moderately close color match and w...
