Which "classical" period? Troy and all that (1200 BCE and earlier)? Bronze weapons. 10th through 8th century BCE? A mix, depending on wealth. After that, mostly iron.

The question shouldn't be "safer", but "safe enough". I wear a set of LEATHER elbows, and they have protected me against direct shots that I considered excessive. Helmets area different problem, as the weight is part of the protection. That isn't an issue for the rest of the gear. ------------------...
