Matt, the vikings didn't even EXIST during the Roman Imperial period. They never met.
And "viking" is a job description, not a nationality.

However, lorica segmentata, by virtue of being segmented, is more flexible. It also overlaps so that all areas are covered. It also protects the shoulders better, as Roman musculata does not appear (from sculptural evidence) to have covered them. In any case, musculata is a breastplate; it protects ...

That would be my preference as well. Although I have to say the "Rainbow Warrior" (remember him? lost a bet?) was truly a sight to behold, and one I would have been very sorry to miss. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- Here, let me hold that for you" [This message has been edited by O...

Sir Richard- as you recall, I was around in MSR back in the day as well, on the other side from your arguement. I found it ridiculous that some of those hideous, a-historical suits were allowed out on the field, were considered intrisicly "better" simply because they were leather, while my CoP, look...

Fighting with spear, I frequently see fighters guarding their face by hanging their baskethilt in front of it. I shoot to either side, and if I hit the basket and shove it into their faceplate, tough. Some may complain, but I view it the same way I do when someone complains that I hit the top of the...

I'll put these here for now... Discussions have raged over proper footwear to fight in. Some say to use the proper historical footwear, it works best. Others say they want or need (both in my case) to use modern footwear for safety and/or comfort. How to reconcile the two? Believe it or not, from 10...

Pickaxe and shovel! The Roman Legions, the original Combat Engineers! Gaius Julius Caesar himself once said his armies won more battles with shovels than with swords, and I kind of ran with that idea. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- Here, let me hold that for you" [This message has ...

The question shouldn't be "safer", but "safe enough". I wear a set of LEATHER elbows, and they have protected me against direct shots that I considered excessive. Helmets area different problem, as the weight is part of the protection. That isn't an issue for the rest of the gear. ------------------...

I fight with a fairly short GS ('bout to my chin). When I get closed by a weapond and shield, it helps because my min range is actually closer than they usually expect. I also am quite willing to put my grip/guard against their shield and SHOVE, or "body-check" the shield. In my opinion, GS can be v...

Consider that you must also either be able to get the helmet on and off while wearing the glasses, or be able to put the glasses on after the helmet is. The one helmet I had to wear them under was a modified great helm style; the cheek padding came out so I could put it on wearing glasses, then put ...

If you were rich, you might have a mail shirt- the Romans learned mail from the Gauls, and believed they had invented it ( which they hadn't, they got it from further east). The Roman Coolus and Montefortino helmets types came from Gaullic sources. Hide arm and leg armor under clothing. Depending on...

Years ago, I was put in charge of a small harrier unit, mainly because I was the only one not fighting weapon and shield. For one battle, the plan required that we be very agressive, charge in and do some damage, so I told them, "when I give the word, charge. I'm then going to count to ten, and then...

Lorica Segmentata protects very well, both in SCA combat and in real world. It was used from about the very beginning of the 1st century CE to about the early/mid 3rd century.
