Sieur Raymond- I kill lights by getting within weapons range. Good enought for me. Besides, the East doesn't even have lights, I only run across http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/biggrin.gif them at Pennsic. Our archers are heavies, the only concession being they can't be hit while holding a bow, so ...

Vitus- I approve of the incident involving the archers- I would object to anyone trying to kill an opponent in single combat with another. Maybe the archers you get are smarter than the ones I run across; If they're letting me catch up, they ain't too bright! ------------------ Owen "Death is but a ...

I've never understood the taboo some kingdoms sem to have about targeting arms. I'd love to hear how that came about. Here, you put it out, we're gonna hit it. Targetting hands is another matter. It certainly does change the style. Markland allows it, but we use padded weapons and much lower impact ...

Gee, Vitus, I'm big and slow, and I manage to catch the archers occasionally! I've never had to hit one, they always yield (except one notable exception, who tried to rules lawyer it, him I hit with a marshal). Your comments seem to indicate that only beginning fighters like CA, and they stop after ...

Sir Vitus Litold Von Atzinger- Your fight with Sir Rhys is one of the things I can admire about him, including his threats to the archers who would have interupted your bout. Perfectly appropriate, no matter what game one is playing here. The issue of the siege engineers is another matter entirely. ...

Cet- If you could be cool with such a thing happening to you, more power to you. Me, if someone had out of thier way to be a dick to me, I'd have trouble letting it go with an "Oops, sorry". As for the "period attitude" bit, if such a thing were to happen during a real battle, a Knight killing his K...

If someone can't play nice, they don't belong on the field. I imagine he'd be very upset if a bunch of peasants took it into thier heads to go hunting Knights, even those on their side. To a peasant, what do sides matter? Oppressed just the same, maybe get back a little. ------------------ Owen "Dea...

Jean Richard- I have only observed three crown tournement finals myself. In two cases, the finals looked like fights to submission, with numerous shots that made MY teeth hurt getting shrugged by both. I have also been told of other cases, by people more knowledgable than myself and who's opinions I...

Far from thinking active marshalling is an "abomination", I wish we had more in the SCA. It works well in Markland, and we don't find it an affront to our honor. Unfortunately, honor systems break down when someone won't play that way. Yes, rhinos get bad reps. They often get crowns, too. ----------...

I think it sounds like an intriguing idea- yes, accidents happen, but this would make fighters more careful to see that they didn't. It would also prevent someone from saying "Oops", and advancing while their opponent lies broken. It's very dificult to devine intent, something like this might be a b...

"Viking" is a job description, not an ethnicity. They didn't need to raid Scotland, they OWNED the islands! A truly amazing beer is named for Thorfinn Hausakluif, the Seventh Viking Earl of Orkney, called SkullSplitter, as is the ale. He ruled circa 950 CE, and actually managed to die in his bed! --...

A Roman-style crest block also might be appropriate (I really don't know). Mine is attached using a brass angle-bracket, with two screws to hold it to two blind nuts epoxied into the inside of the helmet. I didn't use a period method because I didn't feel that any of them would hold up to the abuse ...

Read the Legio XX website section on crests. http://www.larp.com/legioxx/ I have two; one for reenactments, which uses a wooden crest block, and one for SCA combat, which uses leather for the crest block, so it's flexible and stands up to abuse. Both are horsehair, but feathers are appropriate. ----...

My experience has been the opposite- the worst rhinos are also some of the hardest hitters. Just because they're stupid enough to be willing to get hit hard enough to dent 12g stainless, doesn't mean I am. What I have noticed is that many of those that call any who complain about excessive force whi...
