We've been getting better and better equipment from India for Roman reenacting, the trick is indeeed getting them to do what we want. The question really is, since this could allow/force custom armorors to stop making munition/basic stuff and concentrate on true custom, is that a good or bad thing? ...

SyrRhys- it that I don't want to do a period that has comprehensive armor, it's that I want to do one that doesn't. There's a subtle difference. Of course, you don't want me doing that period anyway, so I guess it's a moot point. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- Here, let me hold tha...

Marshal- "Problem" might not be the right word. "Annoyance" fits the way I feel about them better. I don't think that I'm "settling" by choosing to do things the way I do. A better descriptive for "those who are never satisfied" is "those who are unwilling to see anyone else's point of view", in thi...

StudBuckle- the Greeks had a type of armor known as a "linothorax", made from multiple layers of linen glued together. Check out http://www.larp.com/legioxx/ , Quintus has a page on it in there somewhere. His is made from (IIRC) 18 layers, and feels like cloth-covered plastic! That, plus greaves and...

Marshal (and others)- I don't think my portrayal is perfect. I also don't think it ever will be perfect. I learn more all the time, and keep working on it. Check out my armor pics over on the Armor board. Does it look like I don't care about authenticity? How often, when the perennial "How to make t...

SyrRhys- but I don't pretend, I do believe it. Of course, some of those opinions are wrong (that's my opinion of yours, for instance), but are still valid. And I don't imply that inclusivity is better, I say it. I think it is. Oh, and I was refering to non-SCAdians who think the SCA should be like t...

And thus we come back to the old arguement yet again, live steel vs. simulated weapons. With simulated weapons, you can do things safely that you absolutly cannot with steel, but it is very difficult at the least to get them to handle exactly like the real thing. ------------------ Owen "Death is bu...

Could someone explain for a non-fencer what the difference between a "false edge cut" and a SCA-style wrap shot is? I don't have the books you all are discussing, and I'm curious. Also, wouldn't a "true-edge falling under the sword" cut hit the front or side of the leg, not the back, as implied by t...

Noone is stopping anyone else from doing a better jo. In most cases, I think it is more likely to be encouraged than anything else. Frankly, the SCA has improved so much over the last 20 years, especially on the field, mostly due to people wanting to do more. I keep seeing people complaining about t...

Unfortunately, Cap'n Markland weapons generally behave even less like the real thing than SCAdian ones do, especially swords. Some combination of the two sytems, with other changes might work, but I can see a raft of new problems, such as the rules lawyers argueing about what "plate" should be, etc....

Chef- it is reasonable that many or even most of the complainers are in the SCA; we have so many participants, and most of the ones outside who might complain don't care enough about a group they aren't part of. I like your analogy. Continueing with it- golf is a fine sport. So is croquet. I don't w...

Well, we do know the Romans used musculata earlier (and have examples), but have only the sculptural evidence for later. These sculptures show soldiers of all classes wearing it, which simply isn't justified by the lack of extant examples (if it were THAT common, we surely would have found some). Ye...

Present tense of "No shit, there I was " is "Oh shit, there they are!" At Pennsic 16, I was fighting in a small unit in the feild battle, about 5 guys, led by the man I was squired to at the time, Baron Sir Garanhir of Ness. We got put at the point of a larger group, and charged the midrealm line. W...

Nope. Of course, the only evidence for Roman use of musculata during the Empire is sculptural, no actual pieces have ever been found from that time, leather or metal. For all we know, it might have been an artistic convention, like all those busts and statues of our Founding Fathers wearing togas. F...

Personal- several sprained ankles, several broken fingers, and a concussion. Worst I've ever witnessed, both bones in a friend's forearm got broken, requiring multiple surgeries to repair. I've never claimed that period shoes don't work. I said that since I KNOW the modern combat boots work, I'll continue to use them to fight in. I have no desire to risk my ankle experimenting. Tim- ok, yes, I am trying hard to stay within the 1st century, for a number of reasons that aren't really important, except that it's what I want to do. There is a lot more domumentation than you would think for the time, but most of it is sculptural, rather than written down, and must be taken with...

I portray a Centurion, so the greaves are appropriate. I had forgotten to bring my crest when the pics were taken, it is made with leather and horsehair, and mounts transverse (ear to ear!). They did wear trousers (brachae) in cooler weather, and I'm uncomfortable fighting bare-legged. They also hid...

Tim- what refusal to compromise? I'm trying very hard to improve my appearance. I'm trying to hide the modern equipment that I need or choose to wear, in order to do so.
