I think it looks pretty neat, for what it is. As a piece of costuming, it'd be great for fantasy/Vampire LARPS, etc. Why denigrate this guy's obvious skill, just because of the medium he chose? Steel is cheap, too, do you charge based on the material cost alone? $180 for 50 hours of work is cheap. -...

Just as devil's advocate gere, but why should I pay $20-$30 for a set of cops instead of $10, if they are essentially the same? My reenactment Roman helmet (Imp-Gal Type H, Aquincum pattern) is from India. Instead of paying a craftsman $600+, and waiting a year or more, I paid $275, and got it in tw...

I misread the rules, it seems. In that case, I have to say that I'd still be annoyed if an opponent delayed a fight because he had to put on armor. I certainly wouldn't fight without real armor under the shield. Not that I use a shield all that often. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway-...

One of Kaffa's fighters is a small scary lady, all of 5" or so, maybe 100, and true fighter spirit. I have physically flung her with a polearm shot, and she bounces right back up. She gets in your face, not because she needs to reach you, but because she likes it. We call her our Psycho Chihuahua. A...

What an idiot. As a spearman, I know that most fighters are just itching to get us back, given the chance. I go straight down, yelling my head off, "DEAD!", when I'm hit. Once the tables have turned, a spear that appears to not take shots is in trouble, and is going to get pummeled. ----------------...

There's a term I learned from doing R/C aircraft; "Stand-Off Scale". It means it looks good from a distance, but the details aren't perfectly accurate, like no cockpit detail. I like it. The SCA is stand-off scale medievalism. Not perfect, not intending or intended to be perfect. The social aspects ...

That's good. The kicker has also been when someone does all those things, and then complains when we keep hitting him. The worst example I've ever seen was a man who, after getting killed, proceeded to walk off the field, through OUR lines, shoving his way through with his sword over his head yellin...

I never said it shouldn't be on the field. I said I thought it was ugly. I also think it looks not particularly effective; why carry that extra weight up so high, when it doesn't seem to do anything useful like redirect a blow? I'm not bothered when people wear inauthentic armor. Besides, if the ugl...

Too often I see people "die offensively" by continuing to propel themselves forward, staggering several more steps before dropping. Your forward momentum isn't that great, unless you keep moving your feet. You stop running, and collapse, you go straight down and maybe slide a little, not continue to...

Crystoll- if you die THAT way towards MY line, I'm gonna clobber you until you actually hit the ground and stop moving. I HATE that sort of ploy; you are DEAD, and cannot take ANY action whatsoever except to fall down. "Die Aggressively" my ass; it's cheating. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a...

One of my old suits is a Sir Jeffrey (from back when it was Squire Jeffrey) special- upholstery velvet and canvas over plastic. It worked great, wasn't too hot even with the padding under it (you need that). As Chef said, the trick is to make sure it fits right, "off the rack" doesn't work. --------...

At least part of it, to me, is that under our rules, it would be unfair for my opponent to offensively use something (his hand) that I can't hit. My first reaction certainly would be to either pry the weapon loose, where we have no way of determining if a "real" weapon would have injured him in the ...

1 1/4" of foam does not compress 1 1/4", but less. It must be at least 1 1/4" thick, and give 1/2". The 1 1/4" DOES refer to the thicknes, or length, NOT the diameter, which is specified elsewhere as either 2" for regular, or the diameter of the weapon for low-profile. ------------------ Owen "Death...
