That aside, any form of propulsion using compressed gas isn't legal under SCA Seige Weapon rules. I've thought about a bungee cannon, with the works all hidden, but the Society Seige Marshal is vehemently opposed to any reproduction of black powder seige weapons, and keeps trying to alter the rules ...

I'm working out how to make a subarmalis, partly from that grave stela. It's hard when you don't have ANY artifacts to work from! "The Roman Army in Pictures", by Dan Peterson, show a member of the Ermine Street Guard in one made entirely of leather. However, that stela does seem to indicate quiltin...

Your distinct personality, The Dreamer-Minstrel might be found in most of the thriving kingdoms of the time. You can always see the "Silver Lining" to every dark and dreary cloud. Look at the bright side is your motto and understanding why everything happens for the best is your goal. You are the po...

On a more serious note; that tent looks like a design I have seen called a "gable-ended marquee". Tentsmiths makes one, you could ask them for more details. Perspective is kind of screwy, it could also be a rectangular marquee, maybe with slanted walls. The Romans did indeed use wall tents. --------...

Sieur Raymond- that is EXACTLY what happens in MSR; you have a couple of "ruling oligarchies". Personally, I like how we do things; I can see maybe a few tweaks, but the romance is cool, assuming everyone plays nice (which doesn't always happen). My point in dropping this grenade was that, if we can...

1) Should the SCA reenact wars in addition to tournaments/grand melees? Yes. 2) If Yes: a) Should we keep the existing rules and not change a thing? I think there could be improvements made, but not at the cost of dramatically changing the current structure. b) Should the SCA work to have society wi...

If "Wars" aren't right, neither are "Crown Tourneys"
Just curious- if we should be doing things with more historical accuracy, how do you propose we choose Royalty? Obviously, the "Crown Tournament" is a purely SCA construct, "recreating" the middle ages as it wasn't, and not medieval at all, and we can't have THAT if we want to be accurate. ---------...

There are those who say that by not going to graduate school, I didn't realize my full potential. However, I am a much happier person doing what I do. My gear is somewhat heavier than the originals; my body armor (Lorica Segmentata) is about right, maybe a bit heavy due to being made for a man much bigger than your run of the aquaduct Roman, my helmet is about 2 pounds heavier (grill and heavier gauge), and I HAVE arm and hand armor. I also wear g...

Well, SyrRhys, it doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense to you, it makes sense to us. I can't imagine why anyone wants to reenact Viet Nam, but they do. Frankly, I think there's room enough for all of it. I don't complain about the tourney companies having late period Pas D'Arms (sp), although it ...

Why does everyone seem to remember Boudicca and Vercingetorix as having "whupped up on the Romans"? Lest anyone forget, they LOST! That said, at least some of the Roman references to women fighting in the barbarians groups may have been an attempt to portray them as "other". It is exceedingly unlike...

Why, just because we have to add rules for safety, does that mean we can't have war games that aren't tournements? The army doesn't use real ammo at each other when they have exercises. We have rules about tournements, that forbid actons that could have been done in period (did they have the concept...

I don't believe that I, as a single man on foot, could easily defeat a mounted knight. I MIGHT be able to keep him from killing me long enough to evade, if I can get into cover. I might even get lucky, if he stops charging and trys to stand over me. Me AND all my buddies against said knight and HIS ...

Why do people keep saying "Western Europe"? Corpora doesn't say "Western Europe", it says "Western CULTURE". That itself encompasses the whole of Europe. It also only says "pre-1600". It doesn't list an early cutoff date. Yes, the core of the SCA is Medieval and Renessaince Western Culture, but it s...

Cheval- Well, I'm pretty sure the ancients held to the law of gravity too, even though it hadn't been discovered yet. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/wink.gif They may not have had the precise concept, but there are a vast number of references to behaviour that would fall into "chivalric ideal". The whole fighting sytem is an artificial construct bearing little/no resemblance to reality, so what's the issue with CA? Well, I already posted that passage, what's your point? I see the section you highlighted, but I'm not sure what you are trying to say. It seems to me that, if the rules include CA, that it is a chivalrous activity within the SCA; I can hardly imagine them making up rules for unchivalrous actions! T...
