In battles, sure. I'd like an occasional "plate is proof" battle, like we have in Markland.

Matt doesn't fight SCA, but I do. Segmentata does make it a little difflicult but raise your arms straight up, but you rarely do that anyway, unless you're fighting oldcastle style. Remember, the Romans didn't just thrust with the sword, they also threw pila, which is quite easy in segmentata. Overa...

I wear it to fight in, and I currently use my reenactment set (sorry, Quintus!). Even the relatively light gauge(18), historically accurate set is amazingly protective and flexible at the same time. Quintus is correct, pad your shoulders well! My new set will be 16g. stainless, if I ever get around ...

Most of the swords I've made are flat-sided, made from larger diameter rattan and shaved down. Padded weapons CAN hit as hard as rattan, but still FEEL different, often vastly. They often don't balance or move as well, too. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- Here, let me hold that for ...

Cap'n- warm salt water IS extreme conditions! For truly extreme- when I was in college, I worked for a research facility doing a corrosion study for the Navy. umm, allowing pushing with the shield would be an EXTREMELY liberal interpretation of that rule. It seems to me that if you're not striking with it, you're grappling, and under the rules, which isn't allowed either. I can't push you with my hand, can I? ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorwa...

Out of curiousity, how do you all feel about the reverse; I will sometimes body check an opponent's shield when fighting great sword or polearm. As far as I understand the rules, it's legal, and have been told so. Usually, I do it when someone charges me, and instead of backing off like they think I...

Kynaz- the Roman Republic and Early Empire had a rank called "Equites", which is generally translated as "knight" (some scholars use "middle rank" to avoid comparison with medieval knights, but that oversimplifys the meaning). The military/social rank was originally of horsemen, rich enough to provi...

I had an image in mind of Sir Richard, before a bout, praying in the eric loudly and openly for God's aid and blessing. If I were to cast a spell at that time, you better believe people'd be upset, no matter what I cast, even a simple "luck" spell for myself. A personal prayer is an entirely differe...

If i were to become a Knight, and the rank is period for me, although somewhat different in substance from the late medieval, I would still be pagan. Not the same flavor I actually am, but pagan nay the less. I do not feel that it is necessary for a person to have a Catholic or Christian persona to ...

WARNING- I do not make helms. You could start with a basic welded skull, and add cheek plates, lower skull section, and neck guard. That's how mine was built, by Mandrake. I wear a pair of knee-greaves, with an articulated industrial kneeguard under it, and hardened leather pteruges (skirt of strips). The only problematic area is right above the knee. The pteruges aren't long enough to protect there, and if they were, they wouldn't move as well. I'm experimenting with...

As a tall fighter surroeunded by short ones, I can suggest you go for legs alot; you're to their legs than they are! Wraps right above the knee, you will have more success than taller fighters with this shot, as you won't have as much tendency to shoot donwards, reducing eliminating the chance of hi...
