Chef-I never said you don't have a right to an opinion, I asked why you even cared about a system you so obviously despise. You asked why a Knight should teach (or, presumably, know) weapons that their persona wouldn't know, isn't the panopoly enough? For an SCA Knight, no, it isn't. That's how we'r...

M. Didius Ovinvs, Legio XX Valeria Victrex And I have no trouble seperating the SCA from my reenacting; in fact, I find the contrast to be refreshing. My 'attitudes' are generally in dealing with SCA issues, where such are appropriate. When I talk about reenacting and the Legion, I maintain very hig...

I fight with different things because it is fun, and that's why I'm here. Chef- you ask <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Why is it that people seem to think that the only way to "HAVE FUN" is to make a historical hash out of things? Cannot doing something the historically accurate way BE FUN? I ...

I wouldn't discuss it on that thread, because it is completely off topic. I was refering to Duke Sir Angus, the one on death row. Although the BoD ruled that as it was outside the SCA and therefore outside our perview, several Kings have demanded his name be included on the roles of the Royalty of t...

Chef- effectively, yes, they have. I will not discuss it here. And I know a man awarded the Laurel for his research into Knighthood. His "vigil" was a Pas against the Seven Deadly Sins. I know another man knighted, in part, for his research into knighthood as much as his prowess. ------------------ ...

Personally, I feel no need to be restricted to weapons "appropriate" fr my persona. First off, I'm not even allowed to use one of the primary ones; pila, or javelins. Secondly, if I tried to use a scutum in single combat, I'd be hampered by it's size(it is intended for formation use), yet have peopl...

Captain Jamie- were these being sold at Pennsic? If that was your stuff, I highly recommend them; several of my Householders bought various implements of destruction, and have been wearing feral grins since! Where can I get the raw material? I want to make a list-legal Roman Signum. ----------------...

I wouldn't mind seeing plastic required to be hidden or unobtrusive. I'd LOVE (and do, in Markland) for my plate to be arrow proof. What I'd like to see better handled is thrusts. Right now, if I set my spear point on someone and push, they ignore me. If I placed a real spear on someone in mail, and...

I wouldn't say "too restrictive", but I prefer my open face Roman. The bargrill is well designed, and I barely notice it. Much of the perference is being able to breath and hear, as well as seeing better. I would have no trouble with having to count touches to my face, and would not switch to a clos...

So, by not swinging full force, you get an advantage in a fight? But that not-full-force blow wouldn't actually work against an armored opponent, would it? By being able to redirect your blow, because you're not swinging full force, you're able to do something that wasn't done in period. -----------...

I wouldn't bother with canvas that heavy. I used a layer of 8 oz canvas and a layer of upholstery velvet for mine, and it held up for several years. My plates weren't held in by rivets; I sewd pockets in, and put jiffy rivets along the seams. That way, I could take the plates out and wash it. I even...

All of the pictures you posted led me to believe that you were refering to fairly tight fitting pieces. Adding an inch of padding to these designs would probably make them unweildy and with limited mobilty. Also, with an inch of padding, you don't need to ground the gauntlet to the grip, so you woul...

Convincing a marshal that linen/wool/cotton/horsehair/etc is "equivelent" is the tricky part. To do that, you need to test it. I line my helmet padding with fabric, because I hate the way wet foam feels. And it's all green foam. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- Here, let me hold that...

Lothar- that would be violating the Rules of the List, in a very blatent way. If you truly believe that the natural padding is safe, then prove it by testing. Would it be ok to use a 20 guage helm, if you "knew" it was safe? Or hide a piece of rebar inside your sword, because "you can control it"? O...

The late medieval concept of Chivalry had not developed during the time I am portraying; however, that does not mean that I don't try to behave and fight in a chivalrous manner. It is part of the game we play. I even have a form of "knighthood" to strive for; the rank of "Equites", which translates ...

Olaf- many years ago, this happened to me, as Knight Marshal of Bhakail. The Earl Marshal overrode my decision, and ordered me to pass a helm, but refused to take responsiblity for any consequences (leaving me responsible for a potentially dangerous piece of equipment on the field). I resigned on th...

I don't do horses. I am infantry. For my persona, a horse would be completely inappropriate. I'll deal with a mule, but I ain't riding the bastard. Let the Legate ride, I'll walk, or drive a cart. Evil creatures, horses, fit only for rich men and those cavalry fops, what think they're better than us...
