From the remains of shield edging found, a typical Roman scutum was around 1/4" thick plywood. Light enough to carry, strong enough to last a fight or two. FrauHirsch, do you have a citation for that ruling? I generally fight pole or two-hander, and I have been known to use a well-time body check to...

If the Indian shops are making crap, it's because that's what sells. I look at the ROman helmets available these days; instead of just the crappy "trooper" helmet that Mus.Rep. popularize, now we can get a wide variety of styles and sizes. Plus, these helmets are not the works of art that the top of...

I loved the Pennsic Peasent's Battle. I got nailed by rocks several time, but it was cool. Lots of people came out to watch because they could participate, and they had a good time. That's a good thing in my book. One of the times I got rocked, I had just "herded" a bunch of rocks back over to "our"...

My scutum has a carrying strap, and it carries in about the same position you are carrying yours, perhaps slightly further back; "back" was definately the wrong word to use. The hand stays on the grip, but the weight is on the strap. In combat demos, the best way we've worked out to use a scutum is ...

Scythius- However, the Roman scuta had horizantal grips prior to the legionaries becoming their own "mules". Also, the scutum would likely have been carried slung over the back; Marius cut down the older oval so that the bottm edge didn't hit the back of the legs when it was caried on the march inst...

Ok, here goes. The Scutum was held fairly low and close to the body, so the grip is actually far more comfortable, manueverable, and less tiring than a vertical grip. The gladius is very easy to draw from the right side. You grip the sword wih your hand turned down, and draw forward. It works even w...

Hint on keeping loaner gear from disappearing; don't let them take it home, at least not at first. Means you have to schlep more stuff, but you know where it is and you don't have to worry about the guy that has it not being able to make to some practice where someone else wants to use it. Now to be...

I rather doubt it was a rifle or musket ball that caused that damage. The hole shows only slight deformation around it, although the picture quality makes it hard to tell; there is some visual evidence that the whole thing was caved in and pounded back out (creases and rippled metal). Also, a large a...

They also reduce the weapon's effective range, as you must keep both hands on the spear to use one. This also tends to reduce the available power to the shot; because you can't let go of the slider, you can't get full extension. I've never seen them to be a great help; if you think you need one to t...

Rev.- however, in the real world, nuetralizing an acid simply by adding a base is often a bad idea. If you add a strong base, such as lye, to a strong acid, the reaction is frequently rather vigorous. It is better to either use a fairly weak base, or dilute it first. ------------------ Owen "Death i...

Crest block is 4 layers of leather glued and riveted with the horsehair in between; fairly flexible and gives on a shot hitting front-to-back. It does tend to deaden straight down shots, so I generally call just about anything that hits that way to avoid making a mistake. The mount is brass stock at...
