If someone facing me in a melee turns their back upon me while still in range of my spear, I can still hit them until they leave weapon's range.

But femenalia are OUTER wear. Hmmm... I have seen girls wearing them as shorts... Based on a description of Roman underwear given to me by Quitus (Matt Amt), I made what basicly looks like a linen jockstrap. Let us move quickly along away from this disturbing image. Me in a thong is sort of like a p...

Capt- not really. There are many instances where I can kill you with my spear while you can do basicly zip about it except pray and cannot get to me because your shieldwall and my shieldwall are between us. In the meantime, I have successfully dodged or blocked incoming arrows. Missile weapons were ...

Kass- but what about what the book doesn't say? If you know the answer because you found it in some obscure source, shouldn't you at least say where to look? If I ask about a particular detail of your garb, should your response be to tell me to go to the internet? Half the time, I don't even know th...

Elaswhere I've posted pictures of my armor. Absolutely not 100% authentic, and for most of the "errors", they were deliberate choices. My helm is not to any particular design, but gives the overall "Roman" look; I could not find a better one when I got it, and the ones available NOW i could not have...

Lach- yep, almost all of my clothing is made from linen and wool. My two fancy tunica are silk (although now I have to replace it thanks to Kass' info on silk!) and cotton (which was very expensive for Rome, but available). When I tell people and explain about how much better these fabrics perform f...

All I can say is that as I've strived to improve, all I've ever gotten was "That is so cool!" in response. Even when I was wearing transitional plate, the worst I ever heard was, "I don't get why you want to wear all that weight, but it looks great". ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- ...

Where are all these authenticity hating people in the SCA? I know lots of folks that don't care to be completely, or even more than minimally authentic, but I don't think I've ever seen actual hostility to it. The only tidbit of truth I can dicern is hostility towards obnoxious thread-counters and s...

Otto- but would you say that because you and others might fight in a battle with no spears, that we should remove spears from the field because fighters don't want to face them? I'm not a "spear god", but I do ok. I LIKE fighting in CA battles, as it gives me a different kind of fight. Keeps me on m...

I wonder what would happen if you held two parellel battles, one with spears allowed and one without. Aside from the spearmen, how many others would show up, if they had the option to not face spears? I think a more useful comparison would be to have several battles, alternating with and without CA,...

Roman Legionary in the Legio XX. I freely admit that I make one major leap; I've been doing this too long to switch names NOW, so I assume that my name in British is an early form of the later Welsh name "Owen", which was then latinized. M. Didius Ovenus was born two years after the Legio XX partici...

A cudgel? Do you take me for some farmer?! A Vitus is what a Centurion carries! Which is so appropriate, because it means "vine staff", and rattan comes bloody close! Duke Logan- every archer I knows DOES control their weapon. I think that your complaint is exactly what I said; similer to complaining that spears can hit you while you can't hit them. Saying it allows "weak" fighters to kill a (presumably) stronger one is the same. I can kill someone that is much b...

Very true. I decided that, given that we can't use the standard Legionary weapons in the same fashion or effectiveness, I should not limit myself to scutum and gladius. That system is most effective in large groups, we can't use a scutum to do many of the things a big shield is good for (like bashin...

Help ID a katana
I'm a fan of the comic PVP, and the artist has posted about a katana that his cousin has, brought home in WWII by his father; dad never talked about the war, so they don't have any information about it. The info is in the news section for 10/4. http://www.pvponline.com/index.php3 Pics- [img]http://w...
