First and foremost, the fighting. Secondly, the social interaction with other insane people that like to swing sticks at their friends.

I wear US military desert boots that have caligae drawn on them. I need the extra ankle support. I need to get the instructions for posting pics from our files yet again, lost the settings when I changed OS. I believe "panopoly" was used to refer to a set of armor. I generaly use the terms "gear" or "rig", but I'm not making any claims of it being historically accurate; the proper term for me would be in Latin anyway, and I do not know what it is. ------------------ Owen "Death is but a doorway- Here, l...

It's not so much a "rule" as a "rule of thumb". And it is supposed to be for small stuff being viewed by non-experts. So, things like the use of cotton instead of linen, machine stitching, etc. I've long viewed the SCA as kind of a "sport scale" version of reenacting. In sport scale R/C flying, you ...

I can't say as to a thrust to the hand, but I have had a sharp object driven through my foot, twice actually. The one that happened as an adult, I swore and continued walking while my boot filled with blood, not realizing how punctured I had been. Messy. Thought I had come down wrong and twinged a m...

Well, we can't have an officially pagan event either; it's all religions. I'm not sure this asshole really was anything more than a loony, as opposed to a devout pagan. Among other things, every pagan sect I know of has proscriptions against using magik the way he did; threats, curses, and extortion...

Hush, no one should be trying to stop you from saying grace over your own food; tell them to shut up and go away. The corporate policy says nothing about private observance, and only prohibits public ones where it is implied that the SCA sanctions it. It does need to be tuned some more; as it stands...

The preservative qualities of hops are dramaticly better than the herbs used in some brews before their common use. Also, many times the herbs didn't so much preserve the ale as mask the flavor as it starts to go off. Hops also allowed brews to be made with much less malt, as a high alcohol content ...

Yes, the haters are there. Ignore them. The SCA's policy on religion is, in my view, a bad over-reaction to issues caused by an obnoxious pagan back in the day. He would, among other things, cast spells during events and claimed to be responsible for all the good weather at events and threatened to ...

The Corinthian was long gone, replaced by the Attic type, which itself was long gone (except for possible specials), by the time the lorica segmentata came into use. Considering how badly Crichton screwed up, I have no great desire. I can accept major suspension of disbelief in a story, such as the whole "transcription error" thing, but little details bug me. There's a scene in the book where our protagonists are fleeing through a village; a tub of lye is knocke...

Sir Gavin, I believe there is a world of difference between the normal wear and tear and abuse that all of our equipment sees, and the dekiberate attempts to damage it. It isn't just spears; if someone is deliberately trying to break a shield, or steps on arrows, or any other action specifically to ...

Raibeart - the SCA's armor convention is that we are all wearing mail and leather. So, armor that makes it hard to judge a blow properly BY OUR CONVENTIONS is problematical; not necessarily needs to be banned, but the wearer must be aware of the issues involved and be prepared to call blows properly...

Sorry critter, but I'm going with Bela and Vladimir here. It isn't yours, you don't get to break it. You also don't get to claim that it isn't your fault if it breaks, because I could let go; again, it's mine not yours and you should let go rather than break another person's equipment. -------------...

I don't have a problem with opponents trying to take my spear from me. What I strongly object to is the tactic of trying to pry it from my hands by bending it around a fixed object or over a shield so that if I don't let go it will break. I have also seen deliberate attempts to remove the thrusting ...

I have a hard getting worked up over ugly armor in general; I see too much steel and leather that are nothing short of abominations before the gods and men to worry about plastic. I also despise the self-rightious attitude many have about plastic. Back when I was active in MSR, my SCA rig consisted ...
