I use street hockey gloves in EGG gauntlets. The fingertips are stitched to holes in the edge of the gauntlet, as is the thumb. Using the same heavy thread (made for stitching leather), I ran several passes back and forth as a strap across the palm and across the second joint of the fingers (midway)...

Even on many polearms, I think "butt spike" is a bit of a misnomer; it's simply a way under the rules for us to use the butt end as a weapon. Try throwing with your hand further back on the shaft. Fins might help, or trail a piece of ribbon as a stabilizer. The Pennsic rules state quite clearly that excessive blows are to be taken, and then "dealt with appropriately", presumably by taking it up with the marshals.

That standard also leaves room for the inevetible hard shots, for whatever reason (misjudging distance, one or both stepping into it, etc), without the shots becoming so hard as to be hazardous.
