I painted a Vitus shield for a customer, and it was surprisingly light. Not heavier than a good Al with edging and hardware. It was nice though because it did not need edging, was coated in the resin and just felt substantial. It made me really want to get one.

Nakos,

The gift went very well, and His Grace like it very much. It fits, but he is using a later period kit right now. When he starts using the other kit again I will get you pictures!

Sincerely,
Owen

For those of us going with the SCA specific crusader look, does anyone have any great suggestions on how/where to get a good "lower-profile" gorget that fits well under mail? I know this is all relative to how big our necks are, but in general, it seems that the metal dog collar types sti...

i tend to think that the fact they are not going to last forever make these shields even more special. kind of like the native american sand paintings that are destroyed after each use. these shields are only a moment in time. as the shield that Isabella made for me gains marks and scars it becomes...

I would heed all of the good advice so far, but also add this... rough up the surface with sandpaper!!! It allows for much better adhesion, especially if you are using acrylics. I have now gone through much trial and error, and found this to be one of the most important steps. It will keep your coat...

I have a personal bias against reaching for a backup dagger while you still have two good hands. You give up all of the advantages of choosing a pole arm in the first place when you do so. Your two good hands are worth nothing if they are no longer in control of the weapon they want. They are no lo...

Many people, many opinions... I would only go 12 for practice and tourney, not only does it make it that much harder to dent, but the added weight can help soak up the energy of the larger shots you take. I have a solid 12g helm, and I cannot tell you how amazed I was when I started using it after t...
