I use an etching primer made for aluminum before I paint, seems to help the paint stick. Clean it real well before [painting with acetone or something similar. The inserts we were using were pultruded to the OD of the ID of the spear shaft. If there is any slop it significantly reduces the life of the spear. We got it in 10 foot lengths and cut it to size, but the supplier changed the minimum order to a lifetime supply.
