For a simple reason: When your opponent has an armour, even if is only maille as in SCA rules, you are not supposed to club it with a sword. So there is no purpose in determining something unlikely. In the real world, the power of the knight was to have a good armour, a sharp sword and to have to f...

Hmm, just a though but I still don't see why we can't subject the armour that comprises the SCA armour standard to scientific testing and determine the levels of force required to breach them. Reasonably accurate* reproductions of the armours exist as do the means to accurately test their destructio...

Yep. Yet very often when I suggest that one ought to use powerful blows I get told that I'm wrong, that powerful blows are the way of the buffalo (and I always wonder if they have translated that word correctly). Apparently some people really can't accept the idea that one can be both controlled an...

The bounds of reason? Let us say the bounds of plausibility. Would it be better to take a contemporary example from a "near-by" location or to take a local example from a couple hundred years off? Neither is a great choice but I would think that either would be better than keeping a bargr...

There are mail drapes covering the face on vendel and valsgarde helms from the 6th or 7th century but those are all from Scandinavia. For a Saxon, you might be out of luck. If you shine your helm and blacken the bargrill you can minimize the effect. Yes, I have noted the mail drapes on the Scandina...

SMDF 2008 Test. "Szmaty" - "light cuts": m A nicely done little test and it demonstrates the potential of even "light" cuts in fighting. It just goes to show that what might look like a "light tap" can be effective cut. This is all the more interesting when co...
