I second Johann on the cutting boards, especially against plastic wasters. I think these are the same HDPE material as IKEA's, and they're as cheap too -- m. Re: WMA gaunts vs SCA gaunts

I ask because I'm possibly interested in getting light gauntlets for doing Cut and Thrust, at least for my off-hand (my dagger has a minimal hand guard). I am not sure that standard SCA gauntlets would give me enough control. I don't know any rapier practitioners that use more than padded fencing g...

This is because of how much you have to pull the blows to keep enough control to avoid injuring other players with arms that are frankly more dangerous. The lesser "lethality" of rattan sticks allows full-speed-full-power strokes, rather than the half speed so often seen in rebated steel....

If you need armour* to practice unarmoured fighting then you are doing something wrong. Anything more than a gambeson (or similar garment) can seriously mess with your technique for unarmoured fighting.

*other than a mask and gloves.

In period I would argue the answer is two things: 1) a gambeson or similar garment, or 2) more practice (pain can be a teacher).
