Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
If the handle was already too far from the shield, shimming would only make it worse. The only way to reduce that specific problem (without modifying the basket) would be to shim/pad between your arm and shield. Point your finger at something, and look at the angle of your grip to your forearm/wrist...

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
Pictures would help. It sounds like the grip is too far from the shield, but I can't tell how the grip is oriented in relation to your forearm. If it is perpendicular, this could cause wrist pain, it really should be angled, like the grip of a 1911 pistol, or something similar. Here is how I strap m...

Re: Hard rubber armour?
Silicone and neoprene spring to mind. Don't know much more, but consider a composite stack, with a semi-rigid inner and outer layer, sandwiching a springy layer of neoprene. That'll distribute impact while lengthening impact distance, thus reducing felt force. I think that would wind up heavier, mo...

That blue "helmet" looks like the same shape that exists in a museum of a fabric helmet cover from Egypt, IIRC.
Hey, it got pretty hot in the Middle East. Putting a quilted cloth cover on the metal keeps it from becoming an oven in 5 minutes.

Re: 16th cent armour decoration--help needed
This is a portrait of a real person, painted circa 1575. He is holding a baton and carries a rapier at his side; I have been told by an arms collector that this specific type of rapier was adopted by Elizabethan courtiers after 1570. What I am interested in knowing is the significance/symbolism of ...

Re: Fighting in a mine/tornado shelter tunnel
Spears don't work really well, it gets real hard to see where the tip is going, and you can hit a face real hard if they're on their knees. You just operate like a sewing machine going through really thick fabric. But yes, the name of the game is thrusting, with everyone bumping into each other, on ...

I'm not sure if it is overlapped or not, I'd think the line would be straighter, and it would be a bit of work to have it butt up so cleanly, while a crack might look like that. But they did fold them over, and sometimes braise the tip, or reinforce it with brass plate, etc. http://www.flickr.com/ph...

I think that James Gillespie refers to this style of etched decoration as "Pisan etching", and they pretty much etched whatever they wanted to fill the spaces without much in the way of narative being required.

I was talking to a blacksmith tonight (not as much experience as Thomas, of course, but not even Vulcan can match his ;) ), and he said that an old trick was to use some glue (Elmers used to be animal based, right?) on the piece in question, roll it in the carbon donor of choice (hair, charcoal, lea...

Glendour made this for a ME dancer in St Louis. She wore it for a performance in CA last weekend. I can say that I helped with it. :) It wasn't a terribly important bit of help, but I did touch it during the making. ;) The source of the design he worked from: http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a2d600...

The first accurate one that lands where it is supposed to, with enough force counts. All the others are just practice shots.
My opponent might throw the first blow, but mine, launched after he starts, may land first.

Re: Article: The tale of the sword – swords in Bronze Age Eu
I didn't have the time to more than skim the first two pages. At least I know in advance to look for the problems.
Bronze can be just about as strong as steel (even the best alloys), it is just a bit heavier because copper outweighs iron.
