Re: A question on cup hilts...

F. Hand and Wrist Armor The outer surfaces of the hand, to one inch above the wrist of both arms and including the thumb, must be covered by one or a combination of the following: 1. A rigid basket or cup hilt with enough bars or plates to prevent a blow from striking the fingers or the back of the ...

Re: C15 Bras from Lengburg castle

It's hard to tell with the image of the Bocaccio woodcut being so small, but I seem to see a difference between the men and the woman. The men appear to have have a short line between crotch and leg, possibly representing the wrinkle formed by the "pouch." The woman's "panties" appear to have a smo...

Re: &*%$#!! aluminum!

You want to push 6061 T-6 around with a hammer, you use a deadblow, not a hard face steel head. Lower T numbers move easier, I believe. Generally, but that isn't always true. The T number is basically the method of artificially age hardening the metal, so you might find a particular alloy where T-3...

It isn't. Its some sort of gold ribbon attached to the collar.

A caracole was performed with pistols. A column (2 wide) charges at a formation, and when they get in range they fire their pistols, peel out, and the next two fire. Wiki:The military caracole as it is usually understood today developed in the mid-16th century in an attempt to integrate gunpowder we...

Re: Mounted Cavalry Charge with lances

Right. But for the pike to resist the horse, it must remain in a FIXED position. As soon as they start moving, BAM. For a great explanation of this, and why neither pikes nor infantry firearms did NOT wipe the knight off the field, see "Weapons and Warfare in Renaissance Europe," by Bert Hall. Move...

Good find, Tasha! I'm sure that people will be finding more examples like that now! Youth, breeding potential, nursing potential, all of that comes into play when we think about it. I wonder if these examples survived because they were becoming more commercially available, and produced by specialist...

Re: this may not fit here but steel over kevlar

I've seen some 223 bullets that made holes in 1/2 plate, and some of their buddies that were stuck in the same plate, nearly penetrating, but not quite. They were mostly sticking out of the plate, but not quite far enough to fall out. They weren't normal rounds, I'm pretty sure they were steel cored...

It also depended on the lance. 15th century 'Battle of San Romano' monster, or 11th century 'Bayeux Tapestry' long spear? In the rest, or in the hand? Underhand? Overhand? My understanding is that an uncouched lance (ala Bayeux Tapestry) can be used multiple times, against multiple targets. (Winsto...

Ashdown actually notes that on the brasses, the inside of the armour looks the same as the outside, and says his reconstruction looks identical from either side. I agree that the lack of overlap between the rows doesn't seem characteristic of historical armour, but I think the weight problem could ...

It is obviously plausble in certain situations because we have surviving examples. It was used to create rigidity around the neck and, as Russ says, possibly to help to retailor it. Re: this may not fit here but steel over kevlar

And that all depends on the bullet, its speed, profile, diameter, weight, material. Some will still be going fast enough to penetrate, and some won't. If it works for a 22LR, it won't work for a 223. If it works for a 223, it probably won't work for a 308, etc.

Armor generally wasn't etched prior to about 1500, at least in Western Europe, I'm not sure about parts East.

I think I found one example of a placard w/o an upper plate armor (solid or brigandine), and it was over mail. But I don't know where it is. Other than that, I don't think so.

Mostly you would find uppers to be brigandine, mostly with layers of canvas for structural support, and brocades, or velvet for coverings.
