The famous armors by Kunz Lochner with the multi-colored arabesque decorations are frequently said to be "cold enameled". This is just a fancy way to say "painted". Mac I'd wondered about those, how they managed to keep the frit on long enough to fire. Cheating hack he was!

i had great results using it on aluminum using muratic acid because the acid reacted so fast on mild steel it worked also but not as deep have fun I used it to remove the galvanization off of some 16g mail I made once. "Dog collars" are shown in the Mac Bible, I doubt that they simply stopped using them since they were functional. But they may have been covered, or not used by certain classes of armored combatants.

Blackening is essentially a process (which can vary) of controlled oxidation. You are oxidizing it, but making the maintenance easier.

Nitre blueing was done in Mexico in the 16th C, Oaxaca was known for this. I've also read that you can turn steel blue using Logwood dye, but I have yet to try this.
