Re: Armor to work around a knee brace.
I think you'll want at least a set of archer's knees made to fit the entire brace. What is the warranty on them? I'm told that Donjoys are warranted against any abuse you can put them through.

I've used a .100 T6 6061 shield for the better part of 3 years (at least two events a month and practice every weekend, three GWs and one Estrella) and only now is the bottom starting to flatten and curl out I can't read the markings on my shield anymore, since it has so many scratches on it, but I...

Re: Arms & Armour Research Help
Go to Barnes&Noble, and get a coffee table type book on arms and armor. There are some that aren't terribly good, but any that gives a broad overview would be a good start. I don't know what they have on the shelf right now, but if you post a few titles that are in stock we can give you a review.

I don't think you should even be asking the question for the next couple years. The injury and repair are too recent, and the recovery ongoing. There are probably a lot of things that your doctor would tell you "HELL NO!" about right now.

Re: .090 6061 T-6.
I could be wrong, but I don't think the rawhide/canvas&resin will add much strength to the 0.090" 6061 T-6. I'd feel comfortable with 2024 T-3, or 7075 T-6 in that thickness, but not 6061, I think its lifespan will be shorter. But if that is your only choice, go for it- just don't expect it to last ...

Re: Copper Casting
Put the wax on the ends of the torc and put it all in the investment rather than trying to put the ends into the molten copper.
Or, you can cast them separate, with a cavity the right size for the torc ends, and solder them in place.

It occurs to me that if the Carolingians see the need to arm many more people in a big hurry, that they might skip the cheek plates so that they can produce more helms with the same amount of steel.

That's more of a daily use knife, rather than something you'd use in combat. My guess is that it would be something like a long seax.

+1 to Mac. I asked Marc Carlson about this some time ago, so +2. http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc-carlson/shoe/RESEARCH/GLOSSARY/bdefjl.htm In modern shoes, all shoes are constructed around a form called a last, which provides the overall shape of the shoe. Lasts can be straight, semi-curved, o...

Re: Mounted to ground combat in the SCA
Another thought. It is 100% legal to have horse bound javelin throwers on the combat list. I've seen some discussion about people wanting to do it. Scarier than hell when they are charging toward you. I've never heard of that. I wouldn't be in favor of it strictly because you wouldn't be able to sh...

What's the time period for these? The book covers 1100-1400 and the portable finds scheme identifies these as being 1100-1400 (the Medieval Period). Does anyone have more specific dating? Are we sure these are buckles and not brooches? Brooches usually have openings so that you don't have to pull i...

Thanks, Mac. Another question while I have your attention: is that skull reinforcement-cap (forgive my ignorance, I'm not sure what the correct term for the piece is) unique to this armet? I've never seen one on any other armet. Reinforces were fairly common, although I can't say w/o looking at my ...

I didn't come up with them, so it wouldn't be stealing from me, it would be research. ;) That was my thought as well, Mac. There isn't anything showing that they were used as "buckles", no dangling belt end, or loop in evidence. I agree that it it is a belt with a ring, not a ring belt, and I hadn't...

Make the simplest buckle in the world, it will only cost you another 32 cents or so. This is from The Museum of London's Dress Accessories book (1150-1450). Rings for belts came in different sizes, some were made from round wire, and others were more square. They had a tongue that was most often ben...
