Re: There is too much leather armour in the SCA.

Crap looking armor will always look like crap. Regardless of what it is made from. Here is an example of one of my "interpretive" leather armor - In the Cattle Raid of Cooley - in every translation I can find, all from scholarly sources - they describe a specific body armor worn by CuChulain as bei...

Re: Rehab some guantlets? Worth the cost?

The diameter of the bolts are probably larger than roofing nails, so it will need rivets. With any modification, you do run the risk of ruining them. I would say that you could try beating it over the horn of an anvil, or a ball stake to deepen it a bit, before removing the bolts. I'd then beat them...

Bubba Gump made burgonets, too. ;)

There are so many variations of burgonets, that you're best off picking one you like, and basing a helm off of that. Doing a GIS, as Curt suggests gives you all sorts of cheek plate arrangements.

If you are doing heat treat yourself in an electric kiln... Here's a tip to help save you a few hours of work. Paint the outside surface with some satinite or other thin refractory cement that usues colloidal sillica as a emulsifier. Then wrap the piece in stainless foil. Your after quench clean up...

So, how bad is Horsefriend? I think a couple of new guys in a group I used to be in just ordered stuff from him, and IIRC they said they got it in a timely fashion. I did indeed recently order a sugarloaf from Sir Alail. His replies to my inquiries were prompt and courteous, and remained so through...

Re: Please read if you have purchased a helmet from Clang Ar

You are one of the few people that have measured their helmets after they were made. More armorers probably should, because it would give them a better idea about whether they need to change their techniques, or buy thicker metal. While the SCA may say 16g is the minimum gauge for safety, don't expe...

It isn't like we don't talk about them.

Or even that they could PROVE damages, or liabilty for the owner. It has to be over $50k, IIRC, to get into federal court, so they'd have to hire an attorney wherever they live, and another in WI.

These are all depictions of the Three Kings. The artist is depicting them as how he imagines men of the Exotic East to dress, using a combination of contemporary Western garments and various Orientalized elements. (I suspect but have no way to really verify that these sorts of costumes would be mor...

I've been tolded that they were spun on some sort of lathe in the Roman factory complex, which might mean they found it easier to make large quantities with that material.

Germans also made some very white armor in the 16thC, because of the manganese? that was in the ores they made the iron from.

IIRC, the bronze barrels were hammer forged on a mandrel. This might have been after casting, it has been a long time since I read the article.

By law, English museums are required to answer questions that are posed to them, it is part of their mission to serve the public. You could email the museum directly, and they might even send you some photos of the areas in question.

This is the last powered mail jig I made. The middle piece of oak is 90 degrees from the rest, I put them together with wood glue. The flanged bronze bushing came from Ace Hardware, and cost a couple dollars. This one is 1/4" ID. The really handy thing about using a drill is that you don't have to d...
