If you were making a covered coat of plates, or brigandine, you could simply use galvanized steel.

We have two award structures combined in the SCA, and that complicates things. Command structure- King, Duke, etc Award structure- Sir, Master, Lordship You can be a Duke, a Knight, one or both. Then, there are those that think only fighting awards matter on the field. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watc...

A century too late but the Ordinance of St. Maximin de Treves (Oct, 1473) talks about wearing a sleeveless mail shirt under a jack. No hood though. "... The mounted archer must possess a horse worth not less than six francs, and should wear a visorless sallet, a bevor [or possibly a mail standard],...

One trick we used when I was in tooling was to paint the bristles at the base of the brush with super-glue to keep bristles from falling out.

Best repurposed grain silo? Tattoine. Seriously. With the exception of the Skywalker homestead and the purpose built set, all those Kasr structures were intended to store grain. Have you seen it lately? http://www.fastcodesign.com/1672518/a-photographer-rediscovers-the-crumbling-remains-of-tatooine#1

Re: Heat Treating Kilns

One of my big questions about advancing my technique and product is about heat treating: Can I use the same kiln to heat treat armor and also to fire clay? Is either process happening in the same kiln harmful to the other? As long as your metal is clean and dry (not coated in oil, etc), there shoul...

The best swords I ever had were shaved rattan and I've got a nice piece of 2 in. rattan in the garage that is going to be either a 48 in. long sword or a 40 in. cross hilted broad sword. Until then, i will continue using my 1 1/2 in. rattan stick, which hits perfectly hard enough, than you. :P And ...

Re: Confusing Italian Fresco armor

He shows the individual rings in the mail, why would he skimp on a few round rivets?

Mr. Mace has armor of the same color on his bicep, and I'd bet on that being tooled leather, and the dags on the guy's waist on the far right.

Re: Metallurgy Question

I'm not sure on the A46100. That particular auction piece was only tested vs 223. It might be that 308 would penetrate, or just needs to be thicker. There's no such thing as a free lunch, so your options are limited. Accept a lower degree of protection. Increase the weight of the protection. Pay a s...

Re: Confusing Italian Fresco armor

It dates it at 1340-1360, so I'd say it is close enough to contemporary with the Churburg harness, as well as similar in design.

Considering that the mace guy has some leather armor, it might be leather.

Re: 2" rattan in Meridies

Hopefully the larger diameter weapons can be classified as experiential or something. The flat sided rattan swords and pole arms add a certain aesthetic. Strictly speaking a shaved 2.25" pole isn't 2"D. It would weigh significantly less- and I doubt there would be much noticeable difference in rigi...
