Re: Sheet Metal Gauge Sized - Wikipedia editor in the house?
Aluminum tends to be measured by the number of thousandths per inch. 0.032"", 0.050", 0.063", etc. Steel tends to go by gage, from when sheet metal manufacture wasn't quite as accurate, so there was more variation, and it was given in a range, say 0.056-0.063" for 16 gauge. But many places will give...

There you go again, Luca...quoting the rules... :D As was explained to me, the ban an fighting from the ground in C&T (came about (over the summer?) came about because a high ranked fighter that was new to C&T hit a guy on his knees hard enough to give him a concussion. I wonder if there is any real benefit to HEMA by certifying instructors, or if it is primarily revenue generating.
Will they be testing/certifying instructors in I.33, Capo Ferro, Lichtnauer, Fiore, etc?

Re: Opinions on legality for fencing
I took a picture of that particular shield when I was in Vienna last month. The gauntlet is an integral part of the shield, so technically the whole thing is controlled by the hand ( and arm) just like any number of round shields I've used in the past. No, it is controlled by the forearm, the hand ...

Re: Fencing and Heavy armor/protection minimums
And it is the reason that we can't fight from our knees in C&T, or so my 3rd+? hand source tells me. Some new crossover fighter (a Duke, IIRC) hit someone on the ground too hard and cut or concussed him through his mask. Instead of saying "That was way to f**king hard, don't do that!", they decided ...

Re: Opinions on legality for fencing
If the gauntlet is attached to the shield, that would make the two be one item. Thus the shield would be controlled by the hand....and as long as he doesn't hold anything in his shield hand, would you still consider it to be 'not controlled by the hand'? Now if he tried to hold a blade or other wea...

It would be better than S&S, but would still be rather dumb. Blocking still requires accepting impact, and that could cause more damage setting you back further than January. My shoulders were screwed up, and I couldn't even lift a 2# buckler at one point, so I switched to 2H forms for a bit that we...

Re: Opinions on legality for fencing
Here in Calontir, it would be considered armor, rather than a shield because it is not directly controlled by the hand. So it would be a bad idea, because if you armor is hit a sufficient blow, you lose that appendage, and you've just made the target so much larger. I don't think that it has been br...

Re: Holes in the side of 16th century breastplates?
X, You are on the right track. There are a few of surviving examples of separate saddle shaped oval plates which are intended to cover the gaps in the waist. They are mounted on the belt that holds the breast and back together. Scalini shows pics of three pairs in his Churburg book. ---one pair in ...

Someone else posted "Mac and Wasson?"

Just think of it as being halfway between a bascinet and a barbute. It doesn't have a visor, so you add a little to the cheeks for protection. You are also getting away from things like camails.

Re: Leather gloves for fencing/rapier
Roping gloves are very good, they are made with deer or elk. But as was mentioned, cuffs are relatively easy to add, but on a commercially available glove you might thing about adding the cuff to the outside edge of the glove, or it might make it hard to put your hand inside.

Re: Holes in the side of 16th century breastplates?
It would be awful uncomfortable to stick your hand through such a small hole. Sword belts, and other accessories, would be on the outside. If anything went through there, or was kept underneath, it would affect how the armor rides on your body, reducing flexibility, etc. And the point of the Holbein...
