Hans Holbein "Dance of Death", c1538

No boss, but it might still have been done, other types of bucklers and mini-pavise shields were center gripped rather than strapped.

It makes it a bit easier to squeeze into? ;) My real guess is that it gives the wearer a deceptively narrower waist to be more stylish. It might be just like what is etched on the lower visor, or it might be strapwork underneath. There are certainly 3 (or maybe 4) pieces to the front of the helmet.

Looks great, Signo! It was fairly obvious that the two of you didn't have a lot of experience in the armors, but I don't think it would be so obvious to people that haven't watched or fought very much. Fighting is fighting, whether you are armored or not, so balance works the same. In armor, exagger...

There was also a chest dredged up from the see off of Holland that had some leather armor, this might be what Chris copied. There are also depictions of splinted leather here: http://www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=8435 Guards of the Holy Sepulchre Strasbourg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/20...

Re: Midwest Tent - Wall tent

That top one isn't for merchants. ;) I assume you mean the one shown in the picture you posted. I don't entirely buy that there's an internal framework there. We may just be seeing a bad artistic depiction of a tent in the wind. All that is visible is a rigid looking top of the tent, plus ropes and...

Re: Midwest Tent - Wall tent

The bracket system looks more complicated, heavier, and bulkier than two uprights, a ridge pole, and some rope. Adding side poles helps reduce the tent's footprint, but they are not necessary. Plus I doubt that the internal framework nonsense is medieval. :D -Derian. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RMLcA...

To combine what I suggested about batting videos, and Wilmot's, if you don't focus THROUGH the target, you're probably just going to be bunting.

Re: how to cut thick leather?

I've used Beverly shears, bandsaws, rolling knives for heavy leather. Choose the safest tool that you have. 1/4" is thick, and will require a lot of pressure by hand, and razors are sharp.

Watch batting videos. We move, and don't completely commit to knocking the ball out of the park, but it is the similar. Look at the coordination of the body (not the specific angles, or taking a step with the lead foot, etc). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww7FrVC99pA Duke Logan would probably recom...

Re: New armoring horse.

There's brakes on at least one of the wheels, from what I can see. Brakes on all four would probably be best, so it wouldn't be necessary to wiggle it around to get a brake lever exposed. I've thought about making a wooden stand for my anvil, etc, with wheels too.

Re: Were there centre grip round shields used in late period

I don't see anything in that database specifically stating any of the rounds were centergrip shield/bucklers. The trapezoidal ones listed were probably small "pavis" style, Vermillion, like the one in the Wallace link. Those often have a vertical handle to grip. If you find a round shield with a bos...

I drove by a Holiday Inn Sign once so... I've read that anhydrous borax works better than 20 Mule Team Borax. An/hydrous No/water. Cook the borax in the oven to cook the water out of it for an hour or two, and you have it in the anhydrous form. Maybe. :) http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/7848-borax-vs...
