for you id suggest 2 pounds per square inch. something to slow ya down a bit would be good

long fibers and a tight weave like others suggested. fabric-store.com is great too.

I make wood round shields. You pick the size. 3/8 baltic birch no void plywood. Covered in canvas and it won't need any additioal edging. Pm me if wanna talk about it.
