Richard, The tassets are just about the only pieces left in the suit that were made by Tom Justus and remain relatively unaltered. The original cuirass I commissioned from Tom was to be a replica of a well-known suit in a museum in Bern; it appears on page 97 of AAotMK. I know you can't see the back...

I have a nice legharness to go with it. It appears in other photos in earlier threads. I just didn't put it on for these pics. I'm very shortly to have an armet to go with the harness, too. The pauldron overlap causes no binding at all. What happens is that the arming points that tie them to the arm...

Thanks for the comments, guys; keep 'em coming. Yes, Gwinnin, I am serious about having traded a girl's phone number for the mail standard. The arms move just fine. They're light and comfortable and fit me very well. The pauldrons only bind if they're not tied up high enough, and then only when I re...

My harness -- cool or not?

Pardon the rust. I was actually in the middle of polishing it when I decided to take these photos. If it matters, the cuirass, fauld, and tassets are mostly the work of Patrick Thaden, but s...

Barber and Barker's "Tournaments" includes a few illustrations from "Der Weisskünig" on pages 74-75. They supposedly represent combats from Emperor Maximilian's life. One of these depicts two men in full plate armour and sallets fighting with swords and pavise-type shields. While this certainly d...

There is indeed some flare to the cuff as it goes under the metacarpal plate on the right gauntlet. The two pieces are attached by a single stout rivet on the inside of the wrist; this allows the metacarpal to pivot a bit and I can get some radial/ulnar deviation out of it. As nearly as I can discer...

There were no *real* cuirasses in the 14th century; only disorganized collections of plates riveted under decorative cloth covers to hide their ugliness, along with a few breastplates -- but those are only half a cuirass, anyway, so they don't count.

:P

Ancient Roman Height

I am involved in a friendly debate with someone concerning the average height of ancient Roman soldiers, specifically any who might have found themselves facing a Germanic "Barbarian" in battle. The fellow with whom I'm debating asserts that average height for Roman men, including those in the army,...

The two guys in the second picture don't seem to be wearing anything that looks at all like an SCA kidney belt.

The top picture looks like a 19th century engraving or something, and besides...wouldn't that item around his waist be made of metal, not leather like most SCA kidney belts?

It's not that I can't afford it; I could probably scrape together enough to make him happy.

I just don't want the cuirass. I've already got one I like better. I do love the arms and pauldrons, though. However, he's already said he won't divide up the suit.

As laughably dorky as I think the stereotypical Tuchuk mentality is, at least they put some effort into creating a coherent visual impression. They look like what they're supposed to look like, which is more than one can say about an awful lot of the "knights" in the SCA...

I notice that whenever this topic comes up, some people mention the fact that in the early days of the SCA portrayals of "any sword-wielding culture" were welcome. This is occasionally used to justify wacky, "fantasy"-inspired armour. I think it should be kept in mind that, at some point, the SCA ma...
