Yes, there is a Dagorhir group here. However, *ALL* armour is worth only one point in their game, which sucks, IMO. Just to shut up all the folks who seem to think that I actually *do* believe that every single SCA marshal is an idiot, I wish it known that I am a marshal, too. I even served a few mo...

Your only mistake, Richard, as far as I can tell, is in assuming that I aspire to be elevated to "the peerage". I stopped wanting to be an SCA knight years ago. I want no part of a peerage that preaches de Charney, yet counts among its ranks men bearing such singularly eccentric and oh-so-accurate n...

If Palymar really did flunk Bascot's helm only because it didn't have a chinstrap, ignoring the fact that it didn't need one, and insisting on it needing one only in order to obey the letter (and obviously not the spirit) of the rule, then I can't see how I can conclude that Palymar is other than an...

A good point, Animal. I'm obviously still smarting from my treatment at the hands of that marshal I mentioned. An awful lot of them, it seems to me, have difficulty thinking outside the box. I doubt the guy had ever seen much full plate armour up close on the SCA field, and he expected my armour to ...

Palymar sounds like an utter ass. Now watch as all his sycophants come crawling out of the woodwork to nod their heads in unison, swearing that he's really a nice guy, and Bascot's account couldn't possibly be true. Never, never trust an SCA marshal to actually know anything about armour. Not too lo...

Pics of an SCA demo

I was digging around and came across an old roll of film that hadn't been developed. I had forgotten what was on it, so I went and had it developed and found these. They are from a public demo my shire did in Fall 2003. My harness fits much better now than it did back then. I think I look fat in a f...

I agree with what Jehan said. Anybody who fights from their knees 'cause "this is the SCA and that's the way we do things here" is obviously more interested in re-enacting May 1966 than the middle ages. You've been sucked in by the game and it's culture, and have lost sight of the goal, "the Dream"...

I avoid fighting from my knees as often as I can, and if I leg an opponent in practice, I insist he keep it. In melee, I'll fight from my knees if I can't easily dislodge myself from the press of bodies.

I thought the modern line of thought on that armour was that it was actually splinted greaves that had been improperly assembled as a body armour. There are a handful of folks here in this kingdom who wear what they quaintly term "stave-coats" that I suspect are based on this faulty reconstruction.

Maybe a lot of my problem is that I was never in pickle-barrel armour, or ugly borrowed stuff. I saved up my paychecks from Burger King for a year, and bought my first plate harness from Mandrake ten years ago. I'm on my second suit now. I never went through the developmental stage of being that bad...
