At that weight, one layer should be more than plenty. Remember to make sure you don't tear the weave of the fabric as you put the rivets through.

I've made brigandines years ago out of one layer of 8oz canvas that are still in use today.

94 pounds???!!???!!!!! Good God, man, what is that made of? Here's my harness, because I never tire of showing it off: m m m m It weighs between 65 and 70 pounds, because a few components (headpiece, cuisses) are still a bit on the heavy side. I know 16ga seems to be the norm in the SCA, but I think...

Once again, I think that a very thick woolen tunic, worn over a nice linen tunic is *more* than sufficient to both alleviate any discomfort incurred from wearing the mail as well as absorb a fair amount of shock. You don't need a gambeson. A wool tunic is enough.

I just received a reply to an inquiry I had made to Ian Bottomley regarding these. I had mentioned the very photo that Effingham has posted earlier on this thread, and Mr. Bottomley says the small, all-iron ones in the picture are about 30" long, and he guesses they might weigh about "12-15 pounds".

If you're using it only because you can't find/afford steel (prices are pretty high...), then I'll be more than happy to send you some pre-cut 18ga steel strips for your CoP.

If you're using it in order to save weight, then it's none of my business...

Could you at least wear the kidney belt under the mail? I also have an Irish harness I like to fight in when I don't feel like putting on my full plate. It's a late 15th century Irish Gallowglass. When playing single-stick, I greatly enjoy assuming a right-side-leading high guard. When the almost inevitable thigh shot comes in at the right leg, I refuse that leg, and usually snipe their arm, shoulder, or head as their sword whizzes past. If they pass forward on their stroke, I pass backward a...

First, one of the first literary references to coats of plates deals with German knights at the battle of Benevento in c.1260. Second, I see scale, not lamellar on this figure.
