"Megellan(sic)...was killed in the Phillipines by a native armed with two 30 inch long pieces of rattan" Sorry, Odawara-san... Magellan was slain with a spear. A Google search reveals that most accounts say that he was first wounded in the foot with either a spear or a poisoned arrow, then received ...

Gruber and Alaric Product Review
I recently ordered a pair of 18ga 1050 spring steel gothic couters from Gruber and Alaric. The price was $200, and the experience was altogether enjoyable. First, the products themselves: These couters are awesome! I've never worn anything so light yet so protective. I swear, it feels like I'm only ...

I'd love to be a full-contact jouster. I even think my harness is just about good enough for it: m I discussed whether or not my armour would be good enough with one jouster in the chatroom. I brought up my plans to have my harness case-hardened. He said that would be a bad idea, since he says it wo...

Giraldus Cambrensis writes of the Danes who attacked Dublin in 1171 that they wore "laminis ferreis arte consutis, or iron plates skillfully sewn together". If that isn't a description of lamellar, then I don't know what is. So, even if the Irish themselves didn't wear lamellar in the twelfth centur...

Help
A long time ago ('70's? '80's?) Smithsonian magazine featured an article about a gentleman on the east coast who made armour. I used to have a copy of this issue, but it was tragically lost in a soda pop accident several years ago. Can anyone help me out here? Who was that armourer? The name was one...

See what I mean about the backplate? Should I have it fixed or get an armet instead?

No worries, William Thanks for the kind word, guys. I mean it. I spend a lot of time on this darn thing, and I want it to pass the test. I think the sabatons are sufficently pointy, Bob. Isn't there one set of surviving c.1450 Italian sabatons in a museum somewhere? They weren't terribly pointy, IIR...

Shh Dave! Uhhh..."Dagorhir"? What's that? Seriously, who are you on that board? The lames in the backplate overlap correctly. The "bottom-over-top" direction of overlap is more typical of Italian harness of this period. The other way is more stereotypically "German". No, what bothers me about it is ...
