hmph. I thought it would be obvious that I was indulging in hyperbole. The katana needs knocked down a few notches, IMO. Until popular "wisdom" relinquishes its treasured anime-inspired notions about what katana can or can't do, I'll be just as vocal about it being a piece of crap as the katanaphile...

No. Katana can't cut breastplates. This test: http://www.shinkendo.com/kabuto.html proves only that, under carefully orchestrated *NON-COMBAT* conditions, a katana (made by Paul Champagne, not Michael Bell) can cause a tiny, irrelevant little cut in a helmet. Who says that katana are lighter than Eu...

First... Where are you at? Second... I don't know about anyone else, but I "bust on" the 14th century because I hate cloth-covered armour. I also hate any age that had more-or-less full plate limb defensed yet featured only small plates riveted to a flimsy cloth cover for torso protection. It makes ...

Interestingly, it was JP's signature line right here on the AA that piqued my curiosity about that movie. I went out and rented it, loved it, and bade my wife watch it with me. She was skeptical, and didn't expect to like it at all, but wound up loving it beyond any other movie she's ever seen. We b...

Sceotan, Lately, I actually have been putting in more time in getting my nascent Living History group's gear up to snuff than I have spent with the local SCA. Which is not to say that the SCA locals ever do anything, anyway... I occasionally toy with the idea of abandoning the SCA altogether, but I ...

I love how some of you just instantly jump to the conclusion that, just because I'm an elitist asshole, I don't ever offer to help new folks out. Nothing could be further from the truth. I quote from a post of mine on another thread ("We Need a New Dead Horse to Beat"), a few days ago: "...I've offe...

This is a hobby, a luxury. If you can't get your mundane life together enough to support yourself and can't muster the resourcefulness to save for quality gear, then....Don't Play. At the very least, hold off on playing until you can afford to acquire kit that doesn't make those of us who can manage...

Where's Effingham when you need him? If he were here, he might have a few bits of advice for your friend. Your friend would be advised to take to heart any pronouncements that come out of Effingham's mouth, for he is none other than Anthony Bryant, author of many (most?) of the Osprey military books...

I fight in a 15th century Italian cuirass repro. http://thadenarmory.com/armor/prog/joshrep01.jpg http://thadenarmory.com/armor/prog/joshrep05.jpg It's made of 14ga, 16ga, and 18ga steel, and I can't feel a damn thing in it, which I regard as an all-around good thing. Moreover, Calidan, I'm in your ...

Animal's view is probably the prevailing one in the SCA. We're about as likely to see the madu justly banned from the lists as we are to see all those 'big mucking tunic' early period fighters and those stainless bascinet & jupon(under which, invariably, is a plastic COP)-clad, SCA-chivalry-worshipp...

Sorry Halvgrim... I don't think the sort of live-steel fighting you've done compares with what the AEMMA is doing. Barring some miraculous about-face in the attitudes of the SCA satus quo, I think the SCA approach to serious medieval combat re-creation and research has had its day. I'd sooner jump i...

How about... After having attended an SCA demo for "Return of the King" last week, and having been introduced to the scholarly study of Medieval/Renaissance European martial arts, courtesy of the Archive's own Magmaforge... I am just about ready to swear off the SCA forever. That demo sucked. I was ...
