Thank you for the compliment on my kit. I usually have no trouble with inspections. the mail standard I wear on my neck features a hard leather gorget and padding underneath to satisfy the marshals. Someday I might add a wrapper to the harness, but I probably won't use it for anything but jousting, ...

I fight in full plate and an armet in the SCA. m m m m While the air and vision in it are undeniably not as good as they are in a bargrilled helm, it's not all that bad, really. It's important that the occularium line up perfectly with your eyes. I'd guess the primary reason one doesn't see more arm...

One of the Ospreys shows a photo of an effigy, showing a Spanish 14th century Knight of Santiago lying on his tomb reading a book of hours. This knight is shown in Milanese-style plate arms, legs and sabatons with a hip-length scale shirt and maille fauld. But that effigy dates to the 15th century,...

Full plate with a shield?
I'd like to collect as many late medieval/Renaissance manuscript images as possible of men in full plate armour--preferably 15th or early 16th century--carrying shields on foot into combat.

Then there was the archery segment and they punch holes in a POS breastplate made of 18g steel and it looked pressed into shape not hammered and they loosed arrows at super close range with 130-pound bows. Even with all the advantages towards the bowmen the bodkin points only went in a few cm. The ...

Josh Warren can do a cartwheel in full plate. has to be pretty damn strong... Actually, Josh is of average size and weight. And his armour is specially built for him. Add to this that he trains in it, and it's not really that much of a feat of strength. Nah, I'm sure Josh is no weakling, but he has...

In general, I despise pretty much everything westerners used to value in the middle ages. Why? Are you of Eastern descent? If not, then why do you hate your own heritage? What, specifically, do you despise in traditional Western values? And I'm not saying that there is no such thing as honor in eas...

Re: Early 16th century Spanish armor?
...how come flint/bone arrowheads can penetrate high quality armor from the early 16th century? If you mean to suggest that high-quality plate armour is being penetrated by stone arrowheads, I think you are mistaken. QED, the text of the work in question does not support that position, and other ch...

Part of the fun of the SCA is the stunning variety of eras and places which can be studied and recreated. If we moved every fight to armor as worn, many of those periods would become useless, lost, no longer represented. As opposed to the situation we've got now, in which the later periods which sa...

I'd like Combat Archery more if we ruled that my plate was proof against their arrows. I mean, why not? Armours of proof existed in period, and there aren't that many people in the SCA who wear full plate; it's not as if making plate proof vs. CA arrows would suddenly make CA useless. I suppose thin...

I myself find that, when I take pride in my appearance (when my armor meets some of my standards for myself, I may perform better. I know, I know--I don't have the sabatons on in these photos. I don't have all the side and rear tassets on either. But this is how I wear the harness usually, and it's how they were often worn historically.

Looks great, but that armour appears to be of a somewhat later style than that used in 1432...1482 maybe?

McGowan Metals (who used to hang out here) used to sell 16ga gauntlets for $78, shipping included, that were pretty darn good. I bought a pair from him, and they are remarkably durable and not bad-looking either. This photo was taken before I had padded and re-strapped them, so they look a little lo...

Re: Silver Kingdom Armoured Tournament
Helm: Minimum 1.5mm, 16ga, with locking visors. We suggest at least 14ga. Must not be able to get a dime into any opening ie: eyes, breaths etc. . This requirement sounds difficult to meet, and would render just about any helm illegal. It sounds like the only thing you'll accept for face covering i...
