Cliff, I have a copy of that article as well. I do not take issue with the notion that arrows could reliably pierce low-quality armour. What I have a problem with is the assertion Stretton makes in the last paragraph of this new article (the magazine is titled "Skirmish," IIRC) which state...

Arrows vs. Armour yet again!

So a recent issue of a magazine I found on the shelves at a local bookstore features an article by none other than the fiendish Mark Stretton on penetration of plate armour by longbow arrows. In this article, he illustrates a test of a flat, unshaped 2mm-thick piece of what he labels "charcoal ...

Not answering for Phelan, but where else am I going to find a basically full contact sport, that is mideval in nature, where in certain times of year, I can stand across from 500 or more folks, run full tilt at them and charge and have a bloody great time. No Amtgard, Larp or boffer system will eve...

And I don't mean to imply that it's not a good-looking kit; I love plate armour. Still... If you're not in the SCA for the history, then what does it offer you that you couldn't get from one of the boffer LARPS (Amtgard, Dagorhir, etc.)? They've got imaginary kingdoms, knights, fun, etc.--everything...

I think they DID have it right in the beginning. Truly? No change was necessary at all? Do you think things should have stayed just as they were at the first event? Do you think we have kept the hobbits, list-legal retiarius nets, and churchmen reciting winnie-the-pooh in Latin by way of benedictio...

Better by who's standards? Certainly not mine, and there are a whole lot of people who agree with me. So what are these popular standards of yours, then? What, according to these standards, would be "better?" Being a Knight is the persona that matters to me. This I don't get at all. To me...

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet (on any of the threads in which this thing has been discussed), but there is a very, very similar item in "The Armour from the Battle of Wisby" that is dated to the fifteenth century.

My new half-harness (progress pics)

A while back, I had posted some photos of a spare cuirass I had bought from Rough From the Hammer, asking for ideas as to what I should do with it. I finally settled on making a speculative reconstruction of a munitions half-armour from the very late 15th/very early 16th century. It's not really bas...
