All conflict is resource based. Is all social conflict resource based as well? I believe so. In this case the resource is the event itself. A sufficiently strong sca king can punish a whole war field by forcing mixed sides. Units will go to great lengths to avoid this, and this was one of the method...

Only a united chivalry can tame this fire. It is greater than any one kingdom, but not the purvey of the Board of Directors. New accords must be forged at the war-regional level by the diverse hosts of the Society. There is precedence for this - it was done with the DFB protocols at one of the first...

Forearms are legal and arguably the wrists. You could aim for them and for gauntlets to batter when used as part of a blocking strategy without breaking the written rules I believe. I would not advise it however. As a lefty I spend a great deal of effort avoiding my opponent's arm as an unfortunate ...

Here it has been necessary to offer rebukes to peers of the realm. I view these men however, yourself and myself included Sir Richard, as victims of a poorly kept field. Thus, I offer my own chastisement to the Chivalry of the Society - "Our field is poorly kept. It is within our power to do an...

Interesting stance. I use many hybrid stances myself to (hopefully) disguise my intentions. I don't think I point my feet at my opponent with sword and board, only spear. What stance do you use when you are only going to get one lick in and it is against a thick opponent? Regards Avery http://sphoto...

However hard a man can throw sword forward, he can throw harder sword back with proper technique. It is true he may not usually need that power by virtue of his form, strength, and good graces, but it is equally true he may miss that power in certain passes. In one of the San Jose practice tapes the...

I'd be surprised if Ansteorra would join in the tube ammo as we have the safety record to back up our use of shafted ammo as well. Well, I'm not convinced it is all the safer for spectators anyway. The Calontiri believe so. Maybe they are right. What about a heavy crossbow with shafted ammo ban? Th...

But kingdoms like the West and Caid will never willing go for a shafted ammo ban and they have the safety records to back it up, spectator issues aside. But if you can get the Outlands, Calontir, Artemisia, and Ansteorra behind a tube ammo standard at Estrella it would also greatly reduce the specta...

[SCA] Sword on Shoulder with Shield

Greetings I was asked why I use the sword back, resting on the shoulder guard. This style seems to have fallen out of favor while I was disinterested in such matters. Properly done, the shoulder is actually tensed back and only very lightly resting on the shoulder prior to power generation. First, w...

The SCA venue allows you to explore high levels of force and intensity at a danger level equivalent to that of American high school sports. It does this very well, but a baton isn't a steel sword, and may be said to only roughly approximate the handling of one. All these studies and arts are valuabl...

The secret of a good event is to make it fun for everyone - serve as much and as many kinds of pie as you can. To do otherwise, especially in a volunteer group, is to cut off your nose to spite your face.

I call it the doctrine of the first party.

To armor effectively against the very highest force levels in sca fighting, you'll want some kind of plate. Collar bones, short ribs, shoulder points, forearms, knees, wrists and elbows should be heavily protected. But as a royal peer I just may get hit harder than most as well. YMMV Regards Avery
