The first duty of the SCA knight is to take care of his or her duties to family and state - the world we survive and preferably thrive in. I'm watching a PBS 3 part special on early Greek culture and Athens - I am floored by the similarities and juxtapositions against ... all this. If there be Spart...

Greetings All My intent with this thread was to re-frame the sca/honor discussion in a more positive light. I've found the responses to be very thoughtful with some very deep insights expressed. I've also been taught that the more one speaks of it, the less you have. I just thought the other thread ...

I was out in two for "years" after starting. I was out in 3 between my first and second crowns. Look for tournaments that have alot of other fighting going as well (challenge fields etc). Study other fighters and don't be afraid to ask politely those who bested you how they did it. Have a ...

It is healed now and I continue to prepare for sca tournament. I hope to visit Caid more often now that I ...

How bad?

If I may presume - take heart and work on other projects. Do not give in to despair. Getting your knee back online will be one of those projects.

Mord In civilian life, most servicemen don't advertise their military status. So when I am introduced to a service man or woman in the SCA I like nothing better than to stand up, offer my hand, and thank them for their sacrifices on behalf of myself and my dependants - my wife, and my children. I ag...

Is SCA Combat Honorable?

Greetings Fellow Archivists

You take the King's Field and the herald calls you to honorable combat. What do you do if you don't believe sca combat is honorable?

I invite your civil discussion.

I should have been clearer.

Yes, the fight reflex is strong, but we are on a semi-molten ball of rock hurtling thru space. Additional challenges will be along presently and we will need all our best, so let's try not to kill ourselves pointlessly?

Your mistake my meaning.

Shedding blood over a point of honor is moronic, and does not define honor.

1) I'd be somewhat concerned about the lack of wrist articulation. Depending on how you fight and move, this may not be an issue. 2) I don't like the wrap around thumbs because they interfere with my grip by pulling the thumb away from the haft. I like a big attached thumb plate, padded, riveted in ...

What, if I may ask, would be the primary and secondary applications? I can offer some insights for sca combat, but I would defer to for steel to someone who does that.

Footwear can also be important armor - not against baton strikes but against other people's missteps. A well protected ankle is going to generally shed such incidental contact, a loose boot cuff will shed better than a formed one. We're good about not stepping on each other's feet but it does happen...

I use a Calontir style boot with a loose cuff and well fitted "shoe" with vibram soles. The vibram soles provide excellent traction in most situations and armors the bottom of my foot from the small rocks that are so common out west. These are also my camp boots. Aroud camp I wear one thin...

I've been reading some of Sir Rhys' writings on half swording - consider a convention where if your bladed hand slips you stop using that hand to simulate that is is now too slick with blood to be any use.

Just a thought.
