Sir Rhys, you are very kind. These new methods (to me) of looking at an old friend (SCA combat) are very welcome. Thank you for taking the time to share. I look forward to working through (however slowly) all you have presented. @BS - It is true that the orientation of my baton/rattan sword simulato...

Thank you for participating, Sir Gemini. Please note I have used no sarcasm in this thread, but sought only to be supportive of your efforts and learned discussion. I look forward to your further shows and research. I've learned a great deal here about edge vs. flat that I either didn't know or had ...

Thank for that last most worthy response Sir Gemini. There was no mistake - your earlier post was in word a slight - perhaps you forgot the smiley? I do not take slights particularly well, for what it is worth. Best of luck in your continued endeavor to the greater glory of the West. Love the show. ...

Please keep the learned exchanges coming (as opposed to pinching off tiny turds - get off my lawn you little dogs )! @Sir Rhys, you've presented some very impressive arguments that I cannot find fault with my sca experiences - but two things remain on my mind. One, weren't katanas extremely expensiv...

Hello all, You may (or may not) have noticed that I do not respond much in these threads. Believe me it isn't because I have nothing to say or rant over. It is not because I do not believe that these conversations are good or useful. The Middle Ages were a long and diverse period and just like toda...

Sword Edge Blocking
Greetings Fellow Archivists There's a great deal of discussion about this in Sir Gemini's thread, but I think this is a deep topic that deserves its own and I invite further discussion of the matter by both Sir Gemini and Sir Rhys here. For myself, I've recently taken up the serious study of sca gre...

The SCA does have wildly different calibrations from fighter to fighter and practice to practice. That said, I always loved the 2 chuckles show. The high point for me was watching Duke Guy of Castle Kirk recited classical poetry to restless chucks for about an hour on their hill as Duchess Darla loo...

So, kind of like a Tuchux deed of arms? Very smooth. Regards Avery Every now and then, one of the 14th century mafia folks posts a well-written challenge on the Archive, couched in chivalric eloquence. As I see it, this is just the Tuchux equivalent of that sort of thing. No flowery chivalric langua...

Epic - the smack talk for 40th is starting early! This old man would be happy to oblige, should we ever cross paths. I don't stand in anybody's line anymore, not Jade's, not Uther's, not yours. You will need to cut down that shield however. Your smack talk will be even smackier that way. Thanks for ...

Hitting light with a 9' spear to the face at speed is harder than pasting someone into next week. The former requires far more control than the latter. The unwritten Estrella conventions reflect this. If the 'best' spearmen don't take light to the face at Estrella, the test of the field rapidly dege...

Whoo boy. The only thing more dangerous than a crazy-good mutant leftie is a crazy-good mutant lefty who has been fighting since he was 8.
Impressive. Most impressive.

Re: Touch kills, face thrusts and fiberglass rods
Well, because it is super fun. I try to be a giver myself... Yeah it does. Several people here have stated that a spear jammed in their eyesocket would only piss them off, "in real life", not disable or kill them. LOL I'd be really pissed off if I had a spear jammed in my eye. Really pisse...

Face thrusting safety, especially with two handed weapons, is a complex topic. Generally speaking, I go for a 20 to 40 degree tilt of my opponent's helm, which requires a pulling back of the spear just as it arrives at someone's head. Those numbers are for Estrella, in the West Kingdom I used to go ...
