I don't want to push, but I do want to make the game available. Once he fires a combat crossbow, I think the nerf stuff will be forgotten. He's old enough for youth combat, no? Again.. it's hard to push kids to like what we like.. either they will, or they won't.. and in many cases they have to fin...

I often ask for feedback. People are generally reluctant to tell you that you are hitting too hard so you have to look for non-verbal clues. Our new fighters generally don't want to spar with me and I don't blame them, although I'm happy to give lefty dukes 101 talks and do speed drills which greatl...

Sewing is indeed a difficult skill. I further note that sca troops with numerous kingdom tabards tend to do better on the war field for a variety of reasons. If you are successful (which is likely) your fighters will become very attached to their tabards. Well made tabards are particularly prized. R...

This post is about not hitting too hard. Consider the egg of a chicken. Consider the force necessary to break the egg with a blow from a baton. Consider the force necessary to do the same damage with same baton to an egg the size of a house. When I sca fight I am, with my baton, striking to induce a...

@Scott - I appreciate your thoughts on the string system. I agree corners appear to be penalized. I have a previous commitment so I cannot attend tomorrow, but Brion speaks for Bellatrix and I look specifically to him for guidance should tomorrow's meetings be fruitful. @Uther - Your point on women'...

This is what I don't understand. Two fighters face each other... Fighter A is wearing a full suit of steel maille over his SCA legal armour, he uses a great helm, turn shoes, a cross-hilted sword with gauntlets, and a full length kite shield. Fighter B is wearing hidden plastic hockey gear, a basin...

Hi Avery, We haven’t always agreed, but I am with you on this one. Excessively large shields in tournament make for boring, un-artistic fights and result a less diverse skill set for the user. They degrade our game for both the fighter and the spectator. Patrick Thank you Sir Patrick, I hope you ...

Your Grace - Should you be so inspired as to be granted victory over the field in honor of your noble lady wife, I should hope it would be the King and Queen of the West 'Show', as such a gracious woman deserves. Syele, West Kingdom Well said! In truth I was thinking of knight's council. Regards Av...

Aaron I am touched. Better me than any lady of my household, ever again. Vets and nurses are heros. I did once stop a toddler from running into heavy traffic, for what it is worth. It was on the way home from an event that Paul suggested I attend. So if I win, it's going to be the Paul and Avery sho...

@ Aaron - If I wanted to engineer a personal victory in crown, why would I accept Duke Uther's offer of great swords? Or discard my shield against Loke after I armed him in 9th round? I cut his big shield from him (unintentionally) and settled the matter single sword, without regret. Fame is a trap....

With respect, I'm not pushing; I'm drafting. And, if the fates are kind, I will be enacting. This is a genuine effort to learn more about what other people think and why that I may be a better ruler, not a railroad for my amusement. It this is to be a battle of ideologies sans sharing than so be it....

When Paul told me two handed spear, the form I have spent the most time in the sca doing and was well known for many years ago, is a lesser form as well. That did not make me feel good at first, but I accept that it is without rancor. Static blocking systems are simply easier to use, and thrusts are...

Sir Daniel I am sorry that you feel so. I know of many fighters who are superior to myself, one such being Duke Havec here in the West because he has done all that I have and done it with a smaller shield. I don't resent him; I give it up to him and all such, and hereby add to his renown. Regards Av...

Rough Draft Crown Tournament Shield Law
Greetings Fellow Archivists I am considering enacting a shield size law for Crown Tournaments only, should I win Western Crown (something I do not assume I will be able to do but it behooves me to plan ahead). I invite your civil discussion and I promise I will give all views detailed consideration....

Please accept my apologies if I have been rude, or inconsiderate. That is not my intent. I've fought many many crowns, and a big tense throw down at Crown is nothing new and I've come to enjoy. Let no one strike in anger, let no one fall in pain. Regards Avery Dude... Your Grace, There are words int...
