It was my first GWW, and I had a great time! Met lots of folks, but as always, too few. I spent most of my time doing brewing-related stuff, except for a brief cruise around the merchants and Kolfinna's memorial. Sadly, we arrived late Friday night, long after the Pas. My EESB won second place, yay....

It's not. Culture and traditions vary geographically, the mechanical results you suggest are universal.

"Discouraging arm hunting" and "not targeting arms" are two very different things. If you hit an arm, people will generally accept it as a legal target and proceed as normal. If you hang your arm out in some funky guard people will hit it. No big deal.

Re: Is anywhere else in the SCA as weird as the West Kingdom

Setting aside our not permitting light weapons combat for the moment, is there something in particular about our kingdom's heavy weapons combat rules and conventions that are as far out of line with Society-wide standards as the Westie arm-hunting prejudice? Avoiding arm hunting is tradition...

The kingdom culture gravitates towards small shields. Large shields are perceived as having an unfair advantage.

Wish I could figure out why the AA attachment isn't letting me insert these directly. The path you are giving to the image is probably incorrect. For images on the web, it's typically easier to use the IMG tag rather than save the file and add it as an attachment. Are these the photos you're thinki...

I disagree. I, nor anyone I associate with that I can think of, does "in-character" interaction beyond name replacement. As I said before -- most SCAdians are just bad at it. You don't think the question of intent bears any importance? The governing and advertising materials are al...

Huh? The attendance numbers for pennsic are available online.

~10.5k seems to be the average for the past 5 years or so. It broke 12k at Pennsic 30.

If you play in a LARP, you get rewarded for your actions in your persona's name. What pray tell is the difference? One similarity between two activities does not imply the same label ought to be used for both. As I posted earlier, in my mind an activity being a LARP implies a "meta game" ...

Well, I've been using square stock stakes on my tent for 7 years and haven't torn a loop yet... I did hit the corners with a file though, and I don't let them get super rusty. Wooden stakes just don't last. They break in hard ground. The end you pound on frays to dust. Use hardwood stakes and a wooden mallet and you'll be fine. You may break a stake once in a long while, but with the proper materials it's a rare event. The only case in which I've felt I needed met...

Also aim to hit the rim of the shank's flat top with those light hammer strokes, not the center. That sharp peak left by a cutter can throw your aim off and make it more difficult th...

It all depends on how you use the word "LARP." In my mind, a LARP implies a level of meta-gaming that does not exist in the SCA and similar activities. Others define it differently.
