Electroplating always leaves an extremely thin layer. If you want a more durable layer of fine metal, you'll need to do something like keum-boo. Even that will wear off with extensive handling, but it's orders of magnitude thicker than electroplating.

Kids-oriented? When I was a child "kids oriented" literature tended to annoy me. I wanted all the details, darn it! Honestly it depends on the kids. Different people will find different aspects of the 14th c compelling, and some perfectly smart ones will find it dull no matter what you try...

The backstory is quite important (and almost wholly 14th century) though. But yeah, erm, *cough*. A single 14th century story? Gosh, there are so many. The wars of Scottish independence. The great famine. The beginning of the Ottoman empire. The war of Breton succession (important precursor to the H...

Unfortunately no. I know the mechanical engineering shop at UW has several railroad car axles though - I made a coining anvil from one (for free!)

I got it at onlinemetals.com, which is just up the street from where I live, so that's easy. I found it in their scrap pile though covered in dust. It was labeled as 1008 cold roll 16g, and I had, make that have, no idea on the variances between metals or gauges. The label looked perfect for what I...

There may be exceptions, it's not like we have all (or even most, or even many) of the originals to know. There may even be left handed wound examples out there that I just haven't seen yet. Hm, that's certainly interesting. I wonder what it implies about the medieval maille manufacturing process.

It doesn't seem like it'd matter in the final product.

As in you made your coils with the wrong handedness? Are all/most surviving rings the same handedness? Your rings appear to be left-handed.

With the Stav Church in Norway (the name of the exact church escapes me) the question lies solely with its date. The carvings on the church depict scenes from "Sigurd the Dragon-slayer," a connection, if tenuous, can be made to the past. I believe you are referring to Hylestad. The church...

Adam of Bremen also has a serious axe to grind with regard to the eventual conversion to Christianity: medieval Scandinavia was a spiritual battlefield in a way, pitting the German church against the early British church (the so-called "celtic" Christians.)

The source for medieval Scandinavians wearing hides as armour is the sagas, which were written many generations after the events they depict. Furthermore, these references are the exception, not the rule, which makes them even less reliable in my mind.
