Here's a decent source for bezant images:
http://medievalbeads.com/content/view/24/61/
Note that some of the bits there are actually bracteats, which were very thin, one-sided silver coins. Bezants are typically gold (hence the name.)

One of these is listed as not of silver(?) Does it say which type of coin it is? There are several possibilities. I'd suspect one of the following: Gold Arabic Gold Byzantine Electrum Byzantine The Byzantines also made copper pieces during this time, but they were quite thick and distinctive - none...

You can show patterns to the world but that doesn't mean they'll bother following it and get it right. A pattern is simply a starting place. To create a properly finished object from one requires not only materials, but also experience and skill. In my experience, it is very rare that a pattern can...

Getting info from a museum
Hello all, I've been doing some research on a particular object - a Viking necklace made up of a wide variety of silver coins: The caption reads: "Part of a necklace made up of 32 silver Arabic, Byzantine, and English coins. All but on...

Universities were just starting to pop up in the early 13th century. The University of Palencia was the first in Spain (it's in Castile,) and it was founded in 1212. However, it died out in 1264, after a decline of several decades. The University of Salamanca (located west of Madrid, in Leon) was fo...

If you think registering names is dumb, you can always submit a blanket letter of permission to conflict. I did. I don't really care if there are other "Derian le Breton"s out there.

Erm, all SCA level heraldic commentary is done online now (via oscar.) You can track your submission online. Several kingdoms use the same software for their internal commentary. True, people cannot yet upload their submissions without doing the paper forms, but a...

I WTB an early 14th century French skilled tradesman. General information is fantastic, but here are the specific details I'm considering: Time: 1320 Location: Brittany and Paris Trades: Moneyer, silversmith, goldsmith. And the questions: Attire? Donasian, yeah, the stump is as big as I can transport. It is a bit of a hassle for long sessions, but I have a strong back. You could do a taller, skinnier stump, or use a bolster for the additional height, but yeah. I'm a bit paranoid about potential back problems, since my father has had four...
