Screw presses were around in the Roman era, did they disappear and reappear in the late medieval period? Honestly I'm not up on screw press history, but I do know there's no evidence for them being used in coin production until the late renaissance, and then only in a limited fashion. They're simpl...

Also: hand hammering works great for pewter and silver. Copper is much harder, but possible.

If you can swing a hammer, you can learn to strike coins.

Drop presses are not historical whatsoever. Screw presses were used in isolated cases for coinage at the very end of period, for striking small coins in Spain. I'm not sure about elsewhere, but they were definitely completely unknown until the end of the renaissance. If you want to do it right, hand...

It was the unofficial Baronial motto last year during the Pennsic of endless rain - Strength through Suffering. On a similar note, the motto of the Scottish Clan to which I belong in the real world (Ferguson) is "Dulcius Ex Asperis" (Sweeter after difficulties). Not quite a motto, but one...

Oakshott type 1 or type 2 is probably your best bet. Type 3 is possible, though it seems to have been contained mostly to modern Denmark. Type 4 is also possible, though it doesn't really come on the stage until ~500 or so. In Archaeology of Weapons Oakshott also suggest that an attached &quo...

FWIW, the Cleveland museum of art has a pretty decent medieval collection. Well worth the trip from Columbus. I don't know if they have leather cases though (you can search their collection online.)

IMO, trying to remove the fantasy element from Pennsic seems like a colossally futile endeavor. There are thousands of people there that, no matter how fervently you shout, will ignore you and keep doing exactly what they're doing.

An-Tir West fluctuates a lot. It regularly breaks 3,000, but last year it was pretty far from the beaten path and I think barely broke 1,500.

Crown events out here regularly have > 1,000 people at them.

It's more or less impossible to say without detailed photos... Coin jewelery often contained coins that were hundreds of years old, and/or from far-flung places. Hm, again it's hard to tell from that image, but if they're English coins from 1184, then the crosses don't go all the way out to the border. If they're English, and the crosses go to the border, and they're solid, then they're from after 1272. If they're not English coins, I'd need more info...

Are you sure? From that picture (though it's hard to tell) it looks like they used long-cross coinage, which didn't exist until 1248 (20 years after the Livonian Crusade). English coinage prior to 1248 was done in the short cross style, where the cross on the reverse only extended to the inner beade...
