Would this also mean you only use traditionally smelted metals, (no vacuum furnace mild steel) I'd like to. Ultimately it doesn't make too much of a difference. Steel is one step closer than an alternative metal, but there are still many more to go. and no electric tools I don't use electric tools ...

Re: options
I would love to get one and wear it, but I don't want to step on toes. Now I know the East does not have any Sumptuary Laws against it... but, you still never know (or at least I don't) what is silently frowned uppon as being above ones station. Go for it. Just avoid the symbols of various orders y...

Derian, Sterling silver may work with a different technique, but with this technique even annealed it was too hard and tore. I can guarantee it works very well with a steel die and pewter backing. We used 0.25 mm thick silver (about 10 mils). A lead backing would work well also (and is what Theophi...

Medieval coins were virtually never cast (there is some evidence for cast coin blanks in the classical period). From my experience cast coins end up being considerably too thick (3-4x thicker than medieval coins), have insufficient detail, and a poor quality surface finish. For a remotely rea...

I recommend a pair of pattens to wear with your good 14thc shoes when the ground is wet. And, cushioned orthotics in your shoes. Plantar fasciitis is baaadd. And easy to get at Pennsic when your footwear doesn't protect you from the dirt and gravel ground properly. And to protect your lovely footwe...

Re: Garters - 14th Century
What's most common in the illustrations, etc., is to wear hose that are apparently sufficiently well-fitted as to not really need garters but there really (AFAIK) enough in the archaeological record to really indicate whether fabric or leather is more "accurate." That depends on one's sta...

James B already brought up the leatherworking book for knife sheaths, but for a very wide variety of A-S and Viking knives there's nothing like Anglo-Scandinavian Ironwork from Coppergate by Patrick Ottaway; ISBN 1 872414 29 X; from the same series. Almost 100 knife blades, all sorts of forms and c...

Knives and Scabbards... other sources?
Hi all, A while back I picked up the MoL Knives and Scabbards book. It's great! I've been looking for other sources with the same level of information that this book has in its catalog without much success. Do you know of other sources for information on knives and scabbards? I'm most interested in ...

I wish there was a good, reliable way to adhere the copper to the steel core ala brazing or hard soldering but if there's a good way to braze something like this I certainly never learned it. I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're trying to do, but tinning the steel first should make solder...
