And Derian, there is obviously no value whatsoever in your observation that you haven't met these people. i haven't met you either - but that doesn't elevate you to mythic status Wholly untrue; my observation has had precisely the desired effect: 1 - Humor. Perhaps you missed the smiley. This is a ...

The two main tricks to doing this type of chisel work is One: remove alot of material from the center with drills and Two: use special ground chisels. Alot of the lines are 1/8th inch and a few even smaller. A normal cold chisel can easly bend and distort them and they are hard to fix. Why drill? I...

The first step is adding electronic. There should always be the possibility for paper, for people who don't/won't connect. But it should be possible to considerably reduce the number of newsletters that go out. I keep hearing about these mythical people... but I've yet to meet one. Personally I str...

A hemispherical punch will give a much more appropriate look than a drill bit. I'd use a chisel shaped punch for the lines. Drills and files will leave distinctive tool marks, as well as not producing quite the right type of shape (especially the drill bit!) Make both out of steel, cutting first wit...

Already did it. Please help me on my crusade to get rid of the ridiculous waste of printed kingdom newsletters. They're consistently out of date by the time you get them, expensive, and still the sole official source of information for important announcements (such as changes to kingdom law). -Derian.

Anyone ever gone bowhunting (or even hiking/camping) in medieval garb and other gear? I don't hunt, but I've gone on a couple of hikes in garb. Fun stuff. As for camping, well, duh. Camping is one of the best parts of the SCA, IMO (especially primitive sites with secluded campsites). -Derian.

I've got a slab of soapstone in my garage that you'd be welcome to cut a chunk off of if you want. I've got way more than I can use and it's dead easy to work. We have a very similarly shaped one; roughly 14" across or so? It doesn't rust, I thought it was aluminum but a magnet sticks to it... it may be a clad alloy of some sort.

We love it.

If you use small diameter pins and rivet tightly, the horn will not leak.

Also, make the holes in the horn slightly undersized, so that the shank of the rivet presses up against it tightly (it will be a pain in the neck to push the rivet through, but it's worth it!)

You can do very simple tooling after assembly without too much worry, but significant tooling is better done flat since a) it's easier to work on a flat object, and b) you may need to adjust the sewing after tooling.

Save up for riveted. It's not that expensive these days, especially if you can wait for a sale.

Decide what pieces you want, then start saving a little bit every paycheck until you have enough to buy it.

Point the elbows to a foundation garment, then the vambraces to the elbows. Works like a charm.

In mid-14th century England, the penny (and cut fractions thereof), generally about 0.75" diameter, 0.5mm thick (quite thin!), and sterling silver (0.925 fine) was the dominant form of money for the vast majority of people. Groats and half-groats were around, but they were far less common than ...
