That can work better, since the rugs are typically heavier and wont move around like a canvas floor can.

They're bulkier (transport) and costlier, though.

Some observations from Estrella 2010...

First, some data. This was my first Estrella. I've been in the SCA for 10 years, mostly in An Tir, and I've been to Pennsic 3 times (2001, 2001, 2005). I love camping events very dearly. There were some things about Estrella that seemed rather odd to me, and I'm curious if they are just the way thin...

To Derian: the use of armour as an insurance policy is pretty well known, as was the use of heraldry to denote one's family and status on the battlefield. I know, and I agree. The religious theory is certainly plausible, but I am not aware that religious traditions in that region were particularly different from those in other parts of Europe where there is evidence that stripping bodies was standard operating procedure. I don't see any evidence being posted either way.....

FWIW, untreated canvas of the appropriate weave density doesn't really leak. It'll get wet and heavy, but as long as you don't touch the walls (which the OP should know is a general rule, living in An Tir), you and your things wont get wet. Applying so much waterproofing that your canvas acts like p...

IIRC, the "orderliness" of the burial pits varies. In some the corpses were stacked relatively neatly, in others they were thrown in randomly.

I suspect there was a reason for the difference.

Making a big wedge or a-frame will be simpler, better looking, much stronger, and not much more expensive (if at all, I'd bet you could get by with less fabric depending on how your 10x10 is shaped).

I'm not a herald, but I think the answer lies in the definition of "personal heraldic ornament"; perhaps how many knights display their arms within a circular white belt?
