Reasonable just makes it an eye of the beholder type thing which is why they just said attempt. IMO Yes and no. There is (almost) always an expected range that psychologists define as normal. Of course there are differences within that normal range, but there is a range. Consider the statement, &qu...

Really a pair of blue jeans under leg armor tucked into boots i really do not have a problem with that. Example If i wore blue jeans to fight in no one would be able to see them because of the rest of my kit. Much like your thong the blue jeans are not the attempt the Armor itself is that. Balin If...

The two are not at odds with each other, Logan. Only at odds with you. Sorry Maeryk, but I have to disagree. The two are at very distinct odds with one another. Unfortunately, there are many people that will do the bare minimum they need to in order to participate. Either they don't care or they do...

The semantic argument that the SEM doesn't have the authority on authenticity, but the KEM does, is just silly. In any personnel-based structure, those in charge implicitly share the responsibilities of those under their direction. So, as the duties of the SEM are stated: This includes directing the...

I am going to repeat that because you keep saying that you don't want to learn sword and shield: You don't need to use sword and shield, or even authorize in it, if you want to fight in the SCA. Calontir requires you auth in weapon and shield before authing in any other system. In Trimaris, at leas...

Not interested in stick and shield at all and thats most of the styles taught or required. JvR, I love you, but as I have told you many times, you can fight whatever style you want. If you don't want to use sword and shield, don't. It is not required for authorization. I am going to repeat that bec...

Re: Question from the SEM
I heartily support a ban on all uncovered plastic armor with the exception of the stuff that is cut and hung correctly as to emulate the hardened or lacquered leather. (I once mistook some very nice dark brown lacquered leather for plastic...) I would also support banning visible modern sports gear...

The advice here is all excellent. Something to consider is that I have found that a stainless helm will transmit more shock to the wearer than a mild helm. Some personal experience about a helm not quite fitting right: When I came back I was using a loaner helm from a local duke who is a friend of m...

Worth every penny.... That's actually nearly 10 times the amount that Christie's had as the expected realization... And over three times the amount that the Tullie House museum had to offer. I do not think it was worth every penny, considering the fact that the professionals did not. The bid war wo...

It sounds as if: 1) You like the idea of owning and wearing, and possibly fighting in, armour. 2) You have some discretionary money that you can buy stuff with. Most people here have given you advice based on their own financial situation. I will try and give you advice based on yours. First Thing Y...

Have you considered using Rough from the Hammer helm halves? You can charge a little more than the halves cost you (probably $60-70?) and still be very reasonably priced. Plus you'd make more money in less time, help another armourer out (Cet), have more consistent sizing (which you say you've strug...

<Start> I know it is the rules, but that is one reason I don't fight anymore. The whole thing is silly. I fought for years wihtout any real armour on the shield arm. No problem except one freaky hit that didn't do any real damage, just hurt some. Requiring a shield on the back of your shield is goi...

I have a Windrose aluminum basket on my side-strapped shield.

That said, there is some benefit to a heavier shield, especially when you are starting.
1) It is harder to move for your opponent / feels more solid when you block with it
2) It will build up your muscles in your shield arm

A) That sword is very cool. B) What is a fortune to someone, is pocket change to another. Even for your target market, $200 isn't cheap and rattan swords get destroyed rather quickly. I personally go through a primary sword every 4-6 months. It can be much more frequently if someone used that sword ...
