For whatever my opinion is worth... At last year's Gulf Wars, before the ravine battle, I was hit with one by someone testing it; I think it was Omarad, as he went to both sides before the battle asking permission to test it out. It hit pretty damn hard. It seemed significantly harder than a 3"...

What I did:

Epoxy the dowel to one of the halves.

Duct tape the second half on to fight. Remove said tape when packing up. You can use strapping tape if you are concerned with the holding power of duct tape.

I got an $80 Brother and it starting having major issues in a year I was unable to solve, so for the $80 it would cost to service, I opted for a new (old) machine. I did something similar -- got a Brother for about $120 -- and mine is still going strong after 4 years of use, no servicing needed yet...

I am going to second the old singer route. I have a Singer 401a that is a beast, but doesn't have its own cabinet so you can put it on the kitchen table. I got it from Craigs List for $100, which is a pretty good price for that machine. The only downside is that it does NOT have a button holer, whic...

Another vote for HE. I own 3 pairs. In my opinion, it is worth they few extra dollars for theirs over polo wraps.

A nicer, but more expensive product, is from Wood 'n Woven. She does hand made winnengas for around $60-75. http://wood-n-woven.com/

Really digging the cart (both actually, Iain). I have had a mind to build one for a while and this may inspire to get off my ass and do it. A minor suggestion on the weapons rack: I found an extra 1x6 toward the bottom enabled me to lean the weapons. http://flyingchimp.com/sca/photos/pageantry2010/2...

I agree with MJ. I wear a Hexpad for the shoulders with no other armour (or gambeson). In my opinion it does a good job of really taking this sting out. How about making a "practice tabard" and a "tourney tabard"? The random people who wander by your practices and the SCA people who never make it to an event both could appreciate the extra effort. I would hope most people cover their stuff even at practice. While we are not as a...

I know Duke Thorstenn has (at least) one, and I think I've seen photos of Greenshield (Duke William/Camric) with one. Both have excellent kits, and the tunics look really cool. This is a nice kit! One suggestion would be to change out the ring belt with a more accurate buckle. It is an easy fix that I think will help.

ThorThorsHammer.com and ArmourAndCastings.com have inexpensive, historically accurate buckles.
